Do you guys run nos?

I'm a Vette guy, don't know anything about a 928, but had a lousy encounter with one today. On several sprints, the guy left me in his tire smoke, and I'm running just over 450 hp at the flywheel. At one stop light I asked him if he was boosted or nos, and he said no. He sounded like a top fueler when we blipped throttles in the tunnel to Imperial, but at lower rpm it doesn't sound boosted, and he can light the tires while going about 30 mph, then just launches when the rubber grabs. I think he's probably lying about the nos. My question to you guys, is it possible he could be running nos and getting that much power out of it? I just checked some websites and see that car, S4 it showed on the rear bumper, should have about 320 hp and weigh about 400 pounds more than my C6.

Why would he lie about nos?

I only know of a few guys running NOS, 928's are road cars and few owners set them up for drag racing on the street. Blown or stroked 928's spank stock Vettes easy, same for the guys with a Chevy engine swap. Even stock due to the gearing of a 928 if the driver picks the right speed to start the race from we are faster than hp/wt suggests.

Any more details, like where it was (Tunnel to imperial doesn't ring any bells for me), and color or plates on the car?

Coming out of LAX on 105 S. then going through the tunnel then taking right turn out of tunnel to get on Imperial to get to El Segundo. Car was either blue with grey hue, or sometimes looked green with grey hue, depending on the light. Probably a tourist, had Utah plates, and huge back tires, probably 315s or bigger. The only times I've heard that kind of exhaust is at the drags. I thought maybe he had straight cut pipes under the car, but saw a dual exhaust on the left side. Looked like it had the bumper cut out to run the exhaust out there.

Mmm.... might be the same one Jimmyt123 wrote about the other day in El Segundo.....I know right where you're talking about, as I lived in Segundo for a few years and drove that tunnel all the time.

If you heard mine, you'd swear it was cammed, stroked, etc., but it's not. Serious exhaust mods, yes. Even more serious exhaust mods to come this summer (headers with a true 3 inch dual system).

As for a blower, you would have been able to hear blower whine as it r'd up......especially under the runway (in the tunnel) where you guys were at.

Getting a rear view of a 928 while trying to keep up in your Vette is nothing new, particularly from a S4 or GTS. If it was an early model, that's even better.

I had a Vette stalking me a few months ago while on my way to TWS for DE, and twice I pulled away from him until he realized what I was doing. I didn't make it easy for him, but I knew a newer Vette was nothing to really take on with my 80 Euro.

About 10 miles into this silliness, he took a big chance on passing (two lane road--traffic coming at us), and it's then I saw the dreaded Z-06 on the fender......I wasn't game for a 100+mph speeding ticket (easily had where we were at), and the Vette only went another 2 miles down the road and turned off at the next cross street. Hardly worth the effort-

Then again, once I got the TWS, I had a blast chasing down a C6 all afternoon long while doing DE.....He'd pull me on the main straightaway, but once into the twisties I was all over him.

The exhaust cutout in the rear bumper cover is an OEM thing, nothing unusual about that...

My suggestion:

Sounds like you Chebbie needs a "boost" (ha-ha-ha----)

Good luck---

Wonder if that Vette realizes I'm in a 27 year old 928, fixin' to blow his plastic car in the weeds (in the turns).....?

Some out of state owners are here for the race in Long Beach, and some of those Utah cars are NOT stock.

Utah is the Motorsports guys like Dave Lomas that do the X pipes. Phil Threshies operation used to be there too, plus I don't think they have a smog inspection like we do, so more blowers and long tube headers.

Apparently, from Rennlist thread anyway, Joker ran into a long time 928 owner and wrench named Walt.

There are some insanely fast 928 in Calif, fastest car I ever saw at Willow Springs was a white 928, and it wasn't a "little" faster than the other cars, it was driving around rocks in the stream.
