Carfax vs Autocheck?
I've done one CarFax and two AutoCheck reports. Generally its a warm fuzzy feeling, but I wouldn't buy a car without one.
Both are similar, AutoCheck is I think experian, not sure on CarFax. Autocheck if the vin is linked via ebay offers a cheaper single rate, like $7.95, both offer flat rate for a whole month, so as long as you are discrete and ask privately other shoppers may be able to run a VIN for you free. Most mods however will not allow VIN begging threads or posts. For Calif cars I do a quick free check through the Bureau of Automotive Repair smog check history page http://www.autorepair.ca.gov/vehtests/pubtstqry.aspx Other states may offer similar info.
