More Newbie Help !
 

Hey all I just finished the Cap,rotor and spark plug change and to my suprise it was pretty easy to get to everything. Thank to all of you.....I also found my heater valve is bad. Got a new one on order though.

My question is What does this part in the picture do??? Is this where I fill the motor with oil? I have done a lot of German work and never seen anything like this????

That is where the 710 goes. ;)

Make sure to change the short hose on the heater control valve.

Read that first line upside down. You have the cap etc for it?

I can't find a link to the picture that ID's all the stuff under the hood, but I will keep looking.

Having some fun with you Brian, write "710" on a piece of paper, turn it upside down. OIL vs 710 ;)

OK OK you got me on that one.............I may have to use it in the future, is there a filter that goes in the holder? It looks just like the oil filter canister on my E320.....Still learning here!

The screen bucket drop down inside and a cap sits on the top with a hose going someplace as part of the breather system I think, with a yellow wingnut type of thing that screws on and holds the whole thing together.

Hey Danglerb Did you see my post below? I was looking for my Cig. Lighter fues and got it taken care of but I found this connector disconnected. Do have any idea what it is for, to my knowledge everything on the car works.....

The screen is designed to help pull the oil out of the crankcase breather gasses as they come up from the crankcase and into the breather area. To assist this process a lot of poeple install baffles under the crankcase breather casting. 928s tend to lift a lot of oil, that is just the way it is.

Cool thanks........Nothing like that on any of the BMW, Audi or Mercedes I have worked on. However it looks almost like where the canister oil filter goes on the BMW 5 series. That is what had me confused.......

John is correct about oil lifting in the 928 engine. in some cases, it gets bad enough that the oil is then deposited into the intake.

Having done some research on this issue, I suspect the very loose tolerances in piston to cylinder wall clearances (typically over .024 to .048 with changeout at .080---ref: FWM's), causing the oil to blow by the rings. On my race engines we typically run .015 clearance (skirt to wall--forged pistons) and on street engines .004 to .006.

Then there is the issue of crankcase ventilation, of which there is very little on the early 928 16V engines.

the screen helps some, but if yours is oiling badly, you may need a catch can or similar item to return the oil back to the crankcase before it loads up in the intake.

Boost and racing situations bring out some weaknesses in the oil system, but with some luck you won't have any of those issues in normal driving. I haven't noticed a problem on my car yet, and haven't really decided which of the things I might want to try to improve things.
