UK imports without DOT restrictions?
Rixter posted a link to a couple ebay.uk 928's the other day with the comment they could be imported without DOT restrictions. Whats that mean in practical terms? After x years DOT doesn't apply from some countries? Still needs the EPA part I guess?

D,
77-80 cars are year exempt from US federalization this means the car can be imported as it was originally built, ie no bumperettes, door bars, side markers etc... you still MUST comply with your local/state laws.. which means you're SOL bringing one into Cali but I can bring in anything I want, including RHD |
Calif smog doesn't scare me, its fairly straight forward to prove to a referee station that the car is clean and using Calif approved smog equipment.
Federal DOT and EPA was a royal PITA because you have to use a licensed conversion shop and do as they wanted done. 80 Euro S 5 spd becomes an interesting option with $1k or so in shipping, then just swap in US smog bits until it passes. Thanks for the info Rixter. |
I was going to import a 78 RHD myself, but now that the 80 EuroS is legal I'm leaning that way
PS, bet on your shp to be well more than $1k |
