Gas in well over sender on top of tank

After a fillup tonight, about 15 gallons added before nozzle shut off, I could smell some gas inside the car. Not "real" strong, so I thought maybe I spilled a bit as the nozzle came out. Drove home, and it seemed a bit less, parked in the up slope of my driveway. Couple hours later I opened the car to get some stuff out, and gas smell again, so I popped the hatch, lifted the carpet and rubber seal and the well where the sender is was full of gas. I sucked it out with a squeeze bottle, but it looks like more is coming from the junction of the metal plate where the sender is and the "collar" holds it down.

I decided not to play any more with gas, and plan to check on it again tomorrow. Maybe a seal needs replacing on the collar thing?

Those senders are held in with the screw on collar, and there is an O ring under a flange on the sender. If the O ring is in good shape, you can tighten the collar. The trouble is that it is hard to tighten the collar enough to effect a seal.

I wound up making a wrench from a plastic plumbing T of the right diameter. I cut slots for the fins on the collar, and some notches to go around the hoses and fittings. I used a sabre saw to cut the slots etc. Previous to this I tried to use a piece of wood and a hammer to tighten the collar, but it was not effective. LOL
