Transport Ideas

Good evening, Tom from Houston. It looks as if I am going to purchase a 928 in California. I am looking for a good and resonable shipper. DAS looks like it is going to be around
$1495 for enclosed shipping. I would appreciate any help/info
you may have. thanks, Tom

Flip a coin, less than half the people who I have read about shipping a 928 are happy about it. Only about what, two nights and three days to drive?

Which end of the state is the car located and what sort of condition is it in?

Transport

The car is in the Bay Area. I would love to fly up there and drive back BUT family concerns, at this time, will not allow. Tom

From what I have read about other peoples experience, good reliable transport is expensive, the cheaper guys promise a lot, but mostly subcontract to the lowest bidder and the guy in the truck does as he pleases.

Maybe one of the bay area guys could babysit the car until its more convenient for you to pick up, or one of the younger guys could drive it out for you?

Guys, thanks for the replies AND yes that is the beauty I bought!!
The sad thing is I have never driven a 928 and only sat in one, a 79 I was looking at. I am a vintage 911 guy and have always loved the look of the 928. thanks again, Tom

shipping

BTW: the $900 was from Long Beach, CA to Austin, not from Hawaii to Austin (that was another $900)

Mark any idea what it would have cost to ship to port of Houston instead of Long Beach?

Just for kicks, count the relays (if any) and fuses in a vintage 911, then lift the wooden lid on the 928 fuse/relay panel and count the fuses and relays. My '91 had 22 relays in the panel and 4 elsewhere, and 43 fuses if I remember right.

That should give you a hint of potential electrical gremlins you may encounter. These are really great cars, but keep that multi-meter handy.

Tom,

Hey there my new 928 man, this is Todd Johnson, your personal assistant! First off, let me say that I've never had any problems with DAS, an I've used them at least 20 times, maybe even 30. But if someone has a good personal reference like one of the above posters, and for alot less money, then you should definately pursue it!

Secondly, in response to the above comment regarding the so called "928 electrical gremlins", you need not worry yourself with such things on your '91 GT. Sure, the early year 928's were plagued with electrical problems (I know personally from having several myself over the years), but by the 1987 model year, those so called gremlins were no longer a problem worth mentioning as "typical". I've NEVER had any electrical problems on the some 20-30 post '86 cars I've owned (with the exception of the easily disconnected tire pressure monitoring system). And by the 1991 model year, these car's are generally trouble free. Sure, an occasional wheel sensor or tire pressure monitoring system malfunction, but no more gremlins. Don't concern yourself with this, Tom.

That was the exact promise I made to him, and I'll stand by my word.............

jimmy,

I'm not trying to deny that what your saying may, and apparentely was, the case with your '91, but why scare the poor guy who has yet to even receive his new GT, with what I feel was an extremely unusual case with your particular '91. That's all........

I don't think Matson transport (the shipping company i used that's very popular in shipping cars from Hawaii to the states) comes all the way to Houston: Id doubt any of them do. I called 2 transport companies before deciding on Matson, takes about 3 weeks to ship: 1 week at port, 12 days at sea.

Garage
Tom----

Reliable Carriers

Horseless Carriages

Intercity runs scheduled p/u and deliveries

There are others.

a good source for your transportation needs is Hemmings Motor.

Suggestion:

ship on "enclosed" carrier (trailer). Slightly higher cost, but it's worth the money. DO NOT USE ANY HOUSEHOLD MOVER (United, Mayflower, Allied, North American, etc). Even though they do provide the service, it's not the same care you're looking for.

My recommendation is Horseless, as they are far and above the premier carrier with these types of cars. Dave Streetman (Horseless owner/operator) is highly recommended as I know him personally.
