Dupont "teflon" wheel cleaner FAR

One of the Renn guys posted about Dupont Teflon Wheel Cleaner being some great stuff, looking for more comments I found a promo going on to get it free after rebate from Dupont.

http://www.carcare.dupont.com/promo/promotions.stm

Bunch of products are listed, looks like you only get to pick one, but free isn't a bad way to try something.

I have my doubts about teflon in cold water doing anything, but haven't seen any reported problems with it. Says its safe on paint etc., no acids, with a dual detergent formula.

Took me a few days to find a bottle in any of the typical stores, Kragen, Autozone, CarCraft, and Napa didn't have it, finally got by a PepBoys tonight and bought one for $5.99.

Nozzle is off/spray/off/spray and the spray symbol looks the same, but one is really more a foamy thing than a squirt like the other.

I tested it on the rear wheels of my 84 Euro with polished, but aged, slots, and my 91 Mustang with factory grey painted 5 spoke wheels and serious grime. No miracles occurred, but did fine on the second round with scrubbing. Tomorrow I give it a shot on my wife's Lincoln with chrome wheels and lots of brake dust.

Brush? The hardcore use a jack, pull the wheel and clean both sides as well as going over the calipers.

This Dupont stuff sure is aggressive, no plan to use it again without some gloves, my hands have that funky stripped of oil feel.

My poor old Mustang hasn't had the wheels clean in years, and the grime was bad enough I was worried that the wheels were actually damaged on the surface. 409 brought the first one back nice with about 5 minutes and a old scotchbrite (thin green pad) I found under the sink.

Several of the Rlist guys said this Dupont was the real deal, so I gave it a shot. So far scrubbing is scrubbing, but maybe it will be different on the chrome wheels. OTOH free after rebate.

The polished and now dull wheels on the 84 I think I will try some Mothers goop I have. Or just wait til I pull them to sell and use a buffer on them.

Slots on my 83 have a bit of haze in the platinum anodizing in a ring just larger than the bolt circle. No clue how I will do any serious messing with them, but I really like the look otherwise.

I think the idea was not that it worked any better as a cleaner but that it left a teflon coating that better rejected brake dust settling on the wheels after you've used it.

Seems a good test would be clean one front wheel with the 3m teflon and the other with something else... get them equally clean - then start monitoring how dirty they get over time...?

My take is the teflon is total BS from marketing, but the original poster on rennlist claimed it cleaned really well with no work, but to be fair I am sure he wasn't starting from "my" filthy Mustang wheels.

Polished slots on my Euro it didn't see to do squat on, but those need something serious to get the haze off them, not just cleaning.
