928 descendant of 1962 Pontiac Tempest?

I read this on ebay, anybody know of other or earlier front engine, rear transaxle cars?

Couple picts of the driveline down a bit in this link.

The descendant of a GM project car? I think Tempests that made it to the showroom had the transmission bolted to the engine like this one.

As Jimmy said, the Tempest was very real. There were some fascinating innovations on some early 60's GM cars. The Tempest used a Corvair transaxle with an input shaft out the front. Some of them had 326 V8's and you could have a 4 speed manual with IRS. It was really ahead of it's time.

Trivia: A Tempest and its IRS was key to the plot in the movie "My Cousin Vinnie".

Interesting - note the rear mounted clutch that allows the rear starter configuration. I guess that also solves the drive shaft intertia issues on the syncro's that Porsche worked around... Since the battery is at the back there is some value in keeping the starter and flywheel ring drive there..

I wonder if Porsche ever seriously considered that configuration - for a manual car there would probably have been room for it as is - for the auto probably not...

As for the 'bendy' drive shaft - do they really mean it flexed constantly under torsion - or that it actually has some UJ's built in ?

I had about a 1952 Fiat 8V (V8) that had a transaxle I believe. My 1956 Maserati 300s had atransaxle with a dedion tube. One interesting thing about the Tempest relationship is that the man who was responsible for the Porsche 924 project was a former GM exec! So that ancestery is not too far fetched.
