Porsche Crest 1978 928 suspension

I love this car, but have noticed the handling seems to be quite different from my 924S. For example, I accelerated to pass a slow-moving vehicle. As I turned the car to the left, it was as if a large amount of oversteer developed, and I had to quickly correct to bring the wheels back into center position, the body swayed quite a bit, then settled down. I find I have to be careful when turning over rough roads, railroad tracks, and the like, as the car doesn't seem to want to go where I want it to, when I want it to. It will respond, but, again, as if I placed a lot of oversteer in the equation.

Is this "normal" for these cars? The ride seems very soft (no problem with that!) but it seems I have to be much more careful and precise in the steering, especially "at speed." The 924S, on the other hand, is very precise, goes where pointed, but doesn't "surprise" me when I least expect it.

I'm no expert by any means...but loose tie rod or rack?

Have you gotten under the car and checked for any 'sloppiness' in any of the front end?

You could need new shocks, this is very common. I would also say that the 15 inch rims with 215s on them are way too small for your car. I would suggest 225/50 16s on the front, and 245/45 16s on the rear at the minimum. These run on 7s and 8s, but if you score 4 7s you can run 225s all around. Bilstein shocks with eibach springs make for a very good handling package combined with the wheels. Of course this assumes that you have no wear issues other than shocks.

I had 15s on my 80. There was a limit it did not want to cross, after which it seemed as if the rear outside tire would roll under as if severely overloaded. They never used the 15s on euro 928s only US spec cars.LOL
