clutch noise?, what is it? - I need some direction
Hello All,
I have a 1988 928 with 34k miles, i noticed a noise coming from what i would say is a throw out bearing, or in German talk, release bearing, I took it to one shop that listened to the noise and said yes it needs a release bearing, so because it all has to come apart anyway they suggest i change the clutch disk and pressure plate $1200 for the clutch parts and $750.00 in labor //// part two, I took it to another shop that drove it and said, the clutch does not slip, and it does not chatter, the noise is not the release bearing but the release arm bushing, the guy said the small ball type plastic bushing wears out and the parts are now metal to metal making the noise, and he says the proof is while you are driving the car, the noise goes away when you put a slight pressure on the clutch pedal, he says the part is $20 and $300 labor, now for the question, has anyone been down this road? and which way do you would you proceed? |
They may well be correct on the diagnosis but way out of like on the price.

With the torque tube it seems real hard to pin down exactly where noises come from. With so few miles, unless its 34k on the 2nd odometer, I wouldn't suspect things like torque tube bearings like I would with a higher mileage car. Bottom line is that it has to be opened op and things fixed.
Heres the 87/88 clutch page from Pelican, $903 shipped for the clutch kit. http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/PartsLookup/search.cgi?command=show_page&Catalog_Name=928_USA_ 87_91_KATALOG&Illustration=301-00&Line_Item= Here is a list of 928 mechanics, http://www.eatel.net/~dslabat/mech.htm BTW my clutch noise wasn't fixed with a clutch and torque tube, both needed replacing, but I still have a transmission input bearing to replace. |
If you are handy you can do this work by yourself. It only takes about 1 hour to have the clutch on the ground...back in is about 2 hours.
