Tool time, tool talk
Rotating ratchets.
Looks like a normal soft grip ratchet drive, but rotating the handle turns the drive. Reported to be extremely handy in tight spots, Bill Ball posted a link to the Husky brand at home depot for $30 3/8 drive, but I did some searching on the patent number and looks like it is licensed by many places, Neiko, Blackhawk, and maybe even snapon in various sizes and prices. ** update ** found the Neiko for $15 shipped, but it is a POS, works but feels like sloppy junk. I didn't realize how POS it was until I played with a Husky today, which feels solid and pretty smooth. Gear Wrench Quadbox. Original Gearwrench ratchet box ends are great, 5* rotation to ratchet, no extra metal around the boxend so it fits in tight spots. Now with two different sized sockets on each end, ala 8/10 mm on one end, 12/13 mm on the other. $25 at Sears for a set of two with 8/10, 12/13, 16/17, and 18/19 mm. 12 point star bits, aka XZN, triple square, or serrated. Flywheel, CV joints, maybe other places require a 12 point star bit. Lot of options from Snapon to Performance Tool (ebay about $10 shipped for a set of 4). EasyDriver. A 2 1/4" ball with a one way ratchet mechanism and a 3/8 square hole through the middle for the bit holder. Flip it over to ratchet the other way, black on top, red on the bottom. Hasn't let me down in 25 years when force is needed on a screw. Flywheel lock. Locks the flywheel for timing belt and other repairs. Easy to make if you have your own machine shop and welding setup, or about $75 from the usual 928 places. Kempf tool. Measures the tension on the timing belt, about $60 from the usual 928 places. Tow Eye. Should be in the tool kit, about a 2x3" metal loop on the end of a large bolt that screws into a fitting on the front or rear of the 928, and the desired point for attaching a tow rope etc. Get one if you don't have one, put some antisieze on the threads and tiewrap a plastic bag over it. Tool 9132 - Steering Rack Centering Bolt 000.721.913.20 Needed during an alignment, its a bolt with point on the end, make one or $12 at 928gt.com. Thread chaser. Like a tap or die, except its made to clean up the threads without cutting. Magnetic and grabit pick up tools. Harbor Freight has these on sale from time to time for a buck. There is a deluxe magnetic pickup with a shield on the sides so it doesn't stick to every bit of iron as you reach way down into the engine bay etc. LED flashlights. Cheap (ok sort of cheap, maybe $20), long battery life, tight beam so its very good for finding small items or reading part numbers still attached to the car.

where do you find the thread chaser? My alternator mouting boss has stripped threads..I was going to try a tap first before i tried to bore out the thing and install helicoils..but a "thread chaser" would be just the ticket

My understanding is that its a "normal" automotive and industrial type of tool that any "real" supplier would carry. Here is a link to an example set by Matco on ebay.
They are also known as rethreaders, just watch out for taps or dies passing themselves off as chasers or rethreaders.

Did a little searching, rethread* seems the best keyword to use. I found this set from Craftsmen which includes some thread pitch files to clean up bolts for $60.
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00942275000P?vName=Tools&cName=Mechanics+Tools Before buying anything I think I will wait to hear from somebody more experienced regarding how complete the set is for a 928's various sizes of bolts. Could be best to buy premium tools in just the needed sizes for a 928. Or on a less optimistic note, go directly to the heilicoil stuff.

do you know how you drive them for clearing threads inside a boss? I cant tell from the picture if they use a ratchet, a T-handle like a tap, or what...(for the alternator mount, there would not be enough room for a T-handle)

I don't have a clue on the how of chasers except carefully?
Here are a few more items. 928 Twin Disk Clutch Installation Kit This one from Carl sounds critical to own for us twin disc types. It has shims to preload the plates, but I think you still need a pilot tool. Chaser for wheel lugs. lift point jack adapters.
