Lifts and jacks for Porsches?
My plans are still a little up in the air on how I want to raise my 928, normal jack and stands, Porken's lift bars, or buy a cheap lift. Now this new thing from Sears,
Craftsman Jack System, Lift N Secure Sears item #00950187000 Mfr. model #50187 http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?cat=Mechanics+Tools&pid=00950187000 What would be HOT is Porken's lift bars setup to work with these jackstands. No idea if they are sold without the jack. I would think so, since most will want 4 stands and it only comes with 2 (but no sign of separate sales). More info and picts. http://www.caymanclub.net/cayman-care/13787-lifting-cayman.html I think I am edging more toward a midrise scissor.

I have found some really nice lifts at reasonable prices here;
http://www.gregsmithequipment.com/Direct-Lift-Pro-Park-7-p/tppro-park7.htm A 928 buddy back in Louisiana bought one of the two post lifts and it worked out really nice in his garage. I am considering doing one next year after I get the Shark den consruction completed.

Good one Red, my ebay link is to Greg Smith.
![]() I wish I had room for a two post lift, but I have a rollup garage door that when open sticks back into the garage about 8 feet and limits the height. Someplace between 36 and 48 inches is about the best I can do without closing the door first, and even then I only have about another foot due to a large overhead storage area. Mid rise scissor comes in 36 and 48 inch max lift height, most with stops every 6 inches. My plan is that some kind of rolling seat will work well under a mid rise. Prices are roughly; Snap on $3200 BendPak $1650 Panther, Greg Smith, etc. Chinese lifts about $1300 Various used about $700 All prices incl shipping, but not tax, local pickup from a private party maybe $200 less, since they weigh about half a ton. Half a dozen people have used two post lifts cheap in SoCal, but I am not having much luck finding a scissor I like. Couple weeks ago an older BendPak sold for $500, but it was the old style thats about 4 feet longer and moves the car several feet front to back as it goes up, so I passed on it. One other point on the two post, the carrier, the sliding part inside the post is fairly long, so a 6 foot lift height may require a 12 foot post height.

Pretty much why I did not open that link, sorry about that. I don't think a scissor lift would be as functional for certain work under the car. Brakes, wheels, fluids etc ok, but dropping a TT would be a pia with that in the way... No?

Ask me in a month.
![]() There is a bit of variability in where the platform, lift mechanism, and arms are located, but several have a kind of "pocket" in the middle where you have at least some access. For most work, even on the clutch and rear of the bellhousing I "think" a scissor may be fine, as long as the car is pointed so the "pocket" is under the point of interest. Back the car in the garage to work on the front, go in forward to work on the rear. Some scissors come with various heights of lift adapters for trucks, and while the 928 certainly couldn't drive over them, it isn't that hard to take them on and off, and that would leave a nice space above the table portion or of the lift. The table could turn out quite handy for many operations. The two post just isn't going to fit, so the real question for me is between working on a creeper for about $400 (lift bars and a good jack and stands), or 36" of lift and working from a seat maybe for $1200. Finding a good price on a local lift would seal the deal, but I am really not that against a creeper, its just that I haven't worked with jackstands before.

The higher you want to go on stands, the larger the jack should be. I would like to get 12-ton HF stands, but my 6-ton put the car at a good height, even at the lowest setting.
![]() Most 3-ton stands fit perfectly, as the half-moon cutouts are the same size as the liftbar pipe.

I have the same problem that RyanP was talking about, when I make up my mind I like to Buy it Now. Its really hard for me to buy and wait a couple weeks while the other options keep bumping into me. How long is the delay for a SoCal shipment? Having them in stock at 928 Intl sure would be nice.
![]() Will the same set of liftbars work on a US 83, and Euro 84 to 86? That GIF could use a ruler in the pict, its about a foot of lift? I think I would go with the 12 ton HF, really not sure on the jack. Costco sells the Arcan XL35 for $70 that is pretty nice, just like most cheap jacks not the most control lowering. Ranger I have also heard is very good. OTOH I have a hard time seeing myself say 6 months from now, wow that mid rise lift was sure a big mistake. Unless I am under it while it has a problem, then I could picture saying something like that, or mumbling it.

Socal would be about 10 days from today, delivered. (~$34 shipping to LA/SD)
The round style fits 78 to 86.0 US, and 85 ROW. The square fits from 86.5 US or 86 ROW, to 95. The GIF shows 6-ton stands, from starting from ~17", going to ~2 feet high. I think the 12-ton start at 19" high. I'd like to have the 12-ton, because I think you could drop the entire drivetrain with those! |

Dunno if its good or bad, but I just found two scissor lifts on the Harbour Freight web page, a 39 inch lift for $899 and a 55 inch for $1399. If that included something like shipping to the local store for pickup, it could be pretty decent, except for the 90 day warranty. I intend to snoop around a bit more, see if the 15% off any single item coupon in the flyer applies etc.
