Need a ignition key cut for 928. How and where that would be on the cheap?

Lost my only key while riding tractor today hours after 928 purchase. My only one...lol. Is it better to change ignition switch or get a key cut?? Anyone been this dumb before?? What did you do>>???? Regards. The dummy.

Dealers can have a key made from the VIN as long as the locks haven't been changed, and Keys4classics.com can cut one from a decent picture, either way is "around" $50 for a basic key, the lighted heads are $25, and the blanks that go in the heads are a bit more.

Good insurance, take a couple "good" pictures of your key and save them.

I would go drag around a BIG magnet.

borrow a metal detector!
or
remove the passenger door lock and send it to Tony Euganeo in PA, he's a former Porsche key cutter and has all the keys and equipment to do it for you

blanks can be purchases on eBay for about $15 including shipping, but you have to have one to match up to......(sounds like you're not there.)

just removing the door lock depends upon whether you used the same key for the ignition as the well as the door/hatch locks. (mines use different keys for ignition and door/hatch/gas cap locks)

locks (including ignition) and key sets can be purchased from 928 International. Give them a call if need be....last I heard they'd sell you a complete set for under $200-----------

Blanks are easy to get, but only a handful of places, like 5 in the US that I know of cut them, 928Intl, Rixters guy, a shop in SF, and all of them sell the blanks too, so if you buy a blank and ask them to cut it, it gets messy if the end result then doesn't work well. 928Intl has tried 4 times to cut a key off my old worn key, and close is the best so far, a wiggle it to work it close.

Rekeying a lock if you have some spare parts "apparently" isn't that hard. Somebody wrote guide or how to on one of the support sites. You have to rekey the locks to match an existing key, since VERY few places can cut a key to spec, only make copies.

Where can I get blanks?

Danglerb 09-26-2007 08:33 PM

Blanks are easy to get, sold on ebay and many other places.

Finding someone to cut the blank is the hard part, and pretty much all of the half dozen people in the world that accurately cut 928 keys include the blank in the cost of cutting a key.

Some guy in Australia will cut keys from a photo. He sells on ebay with a cut option. I hear it works.
