Alien Autotopsy photos-head repair

Thought I'd share a couple of photos of my head repair. I stopped by my local shop today to check progress. I'm very happy with how things are going.

Here is the damage. The exhaust valve is punched through the intake seat.

Here's the seat repair. It looks ver stock. There was a deep hole there before. Still a little more work to do but it's on the mend.

Rich,

Any idea yet what caused it, Amzoil maybe?

Having the head shaved a bit is proving to be a non issue?

rarely is a broken valve an oil problem......it's usually fatigue or over revving the engine beyond its components rated range.

Question:

Are these US spec heads or Euro's??

If they are US spec, how much was the cost of repair versus the cost of replacement (of the head)??

I can see repairing a Euro head due to its rarity, but a US head is fairly easy to come by......

Yes, It's a 1980 M28/11 "S" Hence the effort to save the head.

yep, I'd save it too, being as how it's an "11" motor.....

have you repaired the block yet, or should I ask-----is it as bad as it looks in the picture (cylinder damage)??

How expensive was the head work?

Is it a long term fix, good as new kind of thing?

No idea on the cost yet, but I will report as there is a wide spectrum in machine shop pricing.

After re-newing the heads with guides and a 5 angle valve the heads should last as long as factory units.

The block is unrepairable.

Sorry to hear of the block damage....seems to me to be repairable by cutting out the damaged cylinder and replacing it with new liner.

Short of that.....I have a US 4.5L short block and a set of NIB tolerance group 1 pistons (Euro models---10:1 CR) that might make an inexpensive replacement, if you're interested?????

Let me know if I can help------

Thanks, The block I damaged was a US 4.7 28/13 with my euro "S" pistons out of my 28/11 4.7 block. I have my original 28/11 4.7 block yet so I'm putting it back into service. I have a replacement piston for the damaged one.

Rick

Glad to hear you've got a back up for your block problems!!!

Breaking the Euro head is bad enough, a Euro block would really suck.....

Good luck----

Seems that few want to buy a Euro Shortblock, as opposed to a cheap 5.0. Kibort hasn't found a buyer and is selling the shortblock cheaper than the parts to rebuild it.

why buy a 4.5 or 4.7 when you can get a 5.0 for the same or less?

the answer should be obvious----then again, if you're doing a restoration, the same size is the one to be had......

Anybody need a 4.5L???

I have a Euro 4.5L (out of my 80 Euro) and US 4.5L (in pieces), and NIB set of Euro 4.5L tolerance group 1 pistons too....
