Porsche Crest alternator removed...dead 928!

Bought project 1981 928 euro and drove it 200 miles back home. Alternator belt came off about halfway back, but made it on battery alone with no problem. Drove car for several days on just battery power (recharged at night). Ordered replacement Bosch alternator and removed old one to send in as a rebuild. Now nothing works...no crank, lights...all dead. Thought car would still run just on battery power as before until new alternator is installed, but guess not. Is there something in the alternator wiring that would cause this, or is something else going on? First-time forum user...really a helpful site. Thanks!

It sounds like you didn't connect all the connections....

The alternator has 2 big wires going to the larger terminal -1 goes to the jump post & fuse panel the other goes to the starter & battery... if you just connected these 2 together with no alternator the car would run on the battery alone - so I'm guessing you missed one off...

thanks Alan, I was really scratching my head on that one (if he hooked everything up in the revers of taking it apart...).

I don't see anything in his post to imply he made any connections after removing the alternator. Maybe I am missing something....

As I recall power comes from the battery, to the starter, to the alternator, to the jump post and then the fuse panel. So, if the alternator is removed without making the connection Alan suggests, then power doesn't get to the fuse panel and ignition circuit, so while the starter might have power, turning the key doesn't have power to turn the circuit on that turns the starter on.

Thanks for the replys. Think without an alternator installed, proper connections aren't made and no power to the fuse board would result in nothing working. Still waiting on delivery of new alternator...hope reinstall will solve problem....will let you know.

You can just bolt these connections together if you want - make sure they cannot contact anything else though - impressive sparks & welding will occur...! I don't really recommend driving the car this way much - you are cycling the battery deeply which affects its life.

New Bosch alternator arrived yesterday...installed with new belt...928 started immediately. Guess German engineering is a bit different than Detroit iron. Suspect this will be the first of many learning experiences during rehab. Next project is getting the heater up and running...Oklahoma winters can get cold! Thanks for the help.

issue #2:

if the hoses are still intact and no heat, most likely culprits are vacuum hoses and heater control valve (located between rear of engine and firewall).

disconnect the vacuum line (after running the engine) and see if he heater control valve arm moves into its relaxed position---or moves at all, for that matter. No movement, bad valve or not enough vacuum, it's an easy test for each.
