Changing from round tooth pulleys to square tooth
Couple of questions:
Can you install the cam pulleys wrong? The crank pulley has a punch mark on the side. Does it install in tword the engine, or out facing the balancer? Does it matter? What about the cam pulleys? Is there a right and left, or can you swap them side to side? If there's a difference this may explain my engine issue.... |
The dots always face out...I have seen them put on backwards before and as well have seen a square tooth belt on the HTD pulley.
|
Thanks for the responce, I'm not sure this is the case, I don't have anymore time to look into it now, But If the dot on the crank pulley is facing in twords the block would that change the crank to cam belt timing?
|
Oops...I told you wrong, they should face back towards the cam housings such that they line up with the pointers which are into the die castings. I was not thinking when I typed the first response. I usually paint the marks on the timing belt pulleys so they are easier to see when you line them up.
It is typical for the right side cam to be slightly off the mark due to the tolerance stack-up of the engine. |
I know about the cam gears. I thought you were commenting on the crank gear. It also has a dot on side of the gear. That's the one I'm looking to confirm now.
Dot in tword the crank? Dot out tword the balancer? Doesn't matter...:D |
hey Rich,
Porken is the timing gear guru.... send him a PM and he'll answer all things related to timing gears....... I don't have my FWM's at the moment, or I could let you know for sure. Ken can tell you right off the top of things- ---Russ |
Cam sprockets can be swapped left to right. Ignore the "dots", the Vee notch is what's important. It faces towards the engine to align with the timing pointer.
Make sure all the timing sprockets match the T Belt. All square or all round tooth (HTD). The cam sprockets are made of soft material and wear in the middle. Use a straight edge and make sure the teeth are not concave. If they are replace the sprocket. Looking back I always regretted "upgrading" to the HTD T Belt on my 1982. The left cam will always be off 3 degrees. (unless you buy Porkens timing tool). My advice is to be square. Tony |
I haven't heard about using a straight edge, just that if the anodizing has worn through in any spot where you can see the aluminum, it should be replaced or "possibly" recoated with something.
|
I always installed the crankshaft sprocket dot facing the radiator. Don't think it really matters if the sprocket and T belt are new.
If reusing one or the other and reinstalling oppsite of the orginal rotation, it might afffect the T belt tracking. That is the belt might begin to walk off the sprocket. Tony |

I sent porken a pm over on the list but he didn't reply. Maybe he's off the grid for a while or didn't reccognize my sign in or name. Still trying to solve this puzzle.
