Electric windows - not working (not a switch issue)
OK,
so neither electric window works, and I need to get it fixed. I'm sick and tired of having to get out of the car at the toll house to pay. As I drive NL<-->FR twice a week, that 4 times in & out in the rain at the moment - not fun. So what's wrong? It's not the switch. I know this because if I take the panel off the door & loosen the screws of the window motor mechanism (threatening to take it out), the window goes up and down nicely (well, as nice as a 23 year old window can). So I carefully tighten the screws. Try again. Window works fine. Place all the panelling back, checking with each screw I put in that the window still works. Perfect. Close the door, test again. Perfect. Go inside to have a cup of coffee before leaving, test again.... er.. oh, ok, after minor hesitation it works. Drive 150km's where I get onto the toll road. Drive up nice & close to get the ticket.... #$%^&&#@!! Reverse, park faaaaaar away from the ticket machine so you can open the door to step out & take the ticket. Curse, and drive on only to have to do it again another 150km down the road. Why is this happening? I've greased what looks like it need to be greased, and the only really consistent thing is that if I loosen the screws it works again, even after I re-tighten. Then an hour or so on it no longer works. I hear the motor try to start moving (a dull 'thunk'), but no window movement. 'Helping' by hand to push the window down doesn't help there either. Any ideas? |
Hi,
Try checking the relay in position III. Its a standard 53 relay so replace it with the one for the horn (assuming the horn works) in position X. Good luck, Roger |

according to my owners manual ('84S Euro), position III is unused, although it is 'jumpered' in actual fact. I replaced VI (in the owners manual the FensterHeber - window lifter), with X (the horn one), which is a 24, not a 53. I have no 53's most are 24's so presume they are compatible. No joy though, 'thunk' is still audible (so it's trying), but not getting anywhere. Any further ideas? |
Both sides do the same exact thing?

Why though? Bit more history: They both used to work fine. Then neither worked. Then one managed to go down, not up again (passengers side), and I had to stick a bit of plastic on to keep the rain out for a while. The one day it worked again, so wound it up and left it be. Then the passenger one worked for a while. Now it only works when I give the mechanism some "fresh air" as per the procedure above. Would it mean something if they both don't work? There is definitely power to them on tap at all times, so the switches definitely work as well. |
I saw you were having problems with windows. That was my first issue on my 86. Wher do we start. If you have checked your switches. Pull the passenger door panel off. Disconnect motor for window. I made a buzzer tester that had some super small alligator clips installed for attaching to wiring. Connect them to the leads going to the motor. ( By the way, you can purcase a 12 Volt MICRO BUZZER from Radio Shack) Your going to press switch and see if you have power to window motor. That will rule out all relays and everything back to the switch.
If you have power, your not goint to like the next step. Get or make your self a plastic wedge to wedge the window. Remove the window motor. The motor will come apart. The problem with mine was the brushes over time get filthy and stick so they are not laying on the armature. Get you some electrical cleaner. Pull the guts out, taking care with the brushes. Take your time. After getting the brushes free (carefully) Take a razor blade lightly scrape the brushes on all four sides. Don't lose the springs. Stick the brushes back into channel and make sure they will not stick when you push the them all the way in. Move them in and out till they are free. Your gonna have to put the motor back together Very carefully. (What comes apart, goes back together) If you run into a problem, feel free to call me . This fixed the problem and saved me from buying a new motor. It works as good as new. My number is 912-727-4234. I am putting a web site together call ExoticHotWheels.com. Under Construction. We will also be handling wheels and Vrdestein tires. I can get other types, but Vredestein will be our specialty. We only will be carring wheels that fit Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, Lambogini, Ferrari. Check out this black 928 with some of wheels. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1201838379.jpg |
