A good day at DMV (AAA)

When I bought my 84 Euro months ago I planned to part it quickly, so I didn't bother with title transfer thinking soon enough I would be handing the title as signed off by the previous owner to a scrap dealer. Later on I decided I would like a temporary moving permit so I didn't have to use a flatbed to take it to the shop, but couldn't get one because title wasn't in my name.

Dreading the fees and penalties I finally went back to DMV (AAA style) today, and so smooth. The guy I talked to is a BMW racer and general car enthusiast who really knew the system. Both cars had been registered non op in the past, and I wanted to keep that status for now, so $15 each with no sales tax (technically a use tax in Calif, and non op means not using, so no tax), and I got a temporary operating permit for my 84 good through the end of Jan, and the promise of one for my 85 when and if I need one.

He also said he has helped people register imported cars using the 25 year rule.

Checked on my insurance status with AAA and I have automatic coverage for the first 30 days after title transfer, so no worries while driving it using the temporary permit (red tag for the rear window).

as I have said before, some times it's just who you know, or how you talk to them......

OTOH from what Jim Bailey said the hard part may be passing smog, depending on what happens when the tech puts the VIN into the test computer. I don't think it does anything to enter a VIN number if the test doesn't start, if so I may ask a test guy I know to try a couple VIN and see what happens, if it says proceed with test, or referee station only. It is supposed to kick any non Calif emissions equipped car to a referee station, which is the full inspection on a lift, ID of all the computers etc.

I'm just glad for now I don't have to take the gamble of passing or not.
