porsche 928 wont switch off
hi all.im new to this forum and only have my 86 928 a few weeks so am not too familiar with the car yet.my problem is when i go to switch off the car with the ignition, the car will just keep running.iv found if i pull relay xvi the one with test on it the car will shut off but wont if i leave this relay in.i have tried swapping with another relay but this did not solve it,iv also noticed that when i do turn the ignition key to off the car will run rough but will still run with tis relay in and will only stop when i pull it.so just to recap the car will run with this relay if its in or out but wont shut off if its in.any suggestions would be appreciated.thanking ye in advance.cheers

Welcome to the zoo.
Somebody will surely have a better more detailed answer for you, but in the mean time. 928 ignition switch is two parts, the key and the switch, could be the linkage between the key and switch or could be the switch. You need a copy of the workshop manuals with the wiring diagrams, and as general advice, avoid digging in expecting to fix something specific, better to pick an area and fix everything known to go wrong "while your in there". Cleaning up all the ground points in the car is a good place to start. Since the car is new to you, its a VERY good idea to have somebody that knows the 928 well look it over completely to get a baseline on its condition. |

The community is small, but tight, everybody supports everybody else. Better, more detailed advice than mine is sure to be coming, but with the holidays good answers can take a day or two.
86 Euro is one of the best years for the 928. It has the suspension of the next model year, with the body style and engine of the early cars. Here is a parts diagram, not too good though. http://dcauto.gotdns.com/catalog/images/full/928_USA_83_86_KATALOG/pg_0152.jpg Switch is 964 613 012 00 http://www.mailordercentral.com/928intl/prodinfo.asp?number=964%20613%20012%2000 It might be good if you posted your VIN or all but the last 4 digits if you want to keep it private, so we can be sure of model. thanks for the reply Danglerb.here is my vin wpozzz92zgs84 that was the only number i could find, in regards to my switch problem i had another look but dont think its the ignition switch itself.the switch will work fine when relay xvi is out, all lights on cluster will go on and then off.but when i put back in that relay i can turn key once and radio will get power turn twice and cluster will light up, but when i turn key to off all lights stay on and wont go off unless i pull relay.so with relay out everything works radio, cluster, starter and car will turn off. but with relay in i can only turn the radio on/off but when i turn key twice or to starter i cant them to turn back off.anyone that can shed some light on this will be greatly appreciated.

Swapping with another relay, if the old relay works fine in a different socket, and the new relay fails the same way, I suspect its not the relay. That leaves the switch or the wiring. If someone doesn't post sooner, I'll see if I can figure out which wires or pins on the relay socket to check.
Cleaning the ground point under the pod might also help, but thats just a guess. VIN is 86, sometimes model year gets mixed up, I just wanted to be sure. |
