Value of 1978 928 estimate
 

I'm just thinking of selling my very nice 1978 928 this spring or summer. I've had for about 12 years. Just curious as to final selling prices on these cars lately. Have they been going up, down? Or even selling??

Mine is a very mint car (I have posted pictures here before) with 130,000 miles or so.

Interest in the early cars is up, and often being the cheapest they may actually be the most frequently sold models. Special cars, with the magic low mileage, even in kind of rough barn find condition have sold for as much as I think about $9k. 130k miles removes one category of "special", does it have a low vin, unique color, full leather, 5 spd, concourse winning history, any stuff like that?

The low end of the range is up to you and how vigorously you prepare and market the car, how long you are willing to actively put it on the market, and what you ultimately are willing to accept for it.

I'll toss out a guess of $5k.

Second guess is that if a person showed up and posted in the main 928 watering places that they were looking for a top condition 78, and willing to pay up to $10k depending on the specifics of the car, how many cars would they have to choose from? and how nice would they be?

Chuck Z wanted $40k plus for his frog, but that was a 1700 mile restored example......

average price for your MY is between $500 for a wreck, and maybe $8-9K for a good car.

$10K would be stretching it and everything, I mean everything would have to be working, the drive train would have to be in top shape, and no issues with paint or interior.

Options seem to have little to do with the sale, other than things like Euro S, LSD, to name a few......

Take a look at examples on eBay for a month or so to get an idea of where you're at.

I have a gentleman who wants the car and is offering considerably more than that. Perhaps after I do the PCA Parade concours (I actually have a long history of concours participation with 928s - nothing less than 1st place ever and know what it takes to make a concours 928) this summer I will sell it?

Are vin numbers a factor? mine is #61. Is that better or worse?

For the serious collector they are (...and probably Rixter). The serious collector is also looking for a car with super low miles in all original condition (as an example, my car has the original tires on it). However, as the collectability of the 928 increases nice examples like yours would be great candidates for restoration so the lower the VIN the more desireable.

sorry for low balling your car --I certainly haven't kept up with it.

nothing like being on top of things, concours knowledge and all.

our division is just happy to get cars to show up, much less be "pristine". we concentrate on cleanliness, as opposed to everything being "as it came from the factory. our concours in October amounted to a repeated rain shower all day, with trophies handed out anyway.

That said, I too, have won several concours with my Euro, even though it[s far from pristine, or "as it came from the factory".

vin is 9288200061? so it's in the 1st 10-12 US spec sold to the public, makes it collectable.... there have been a couple lower vin cars show up in the last few months
given the appearance, though I would swap the shifter and wheel for original look, I'd say it's in the $6500-8000 range with proper records

The Frog is a unique car, whose value will be set by the opinion of two people.

The red one is a very nice looking early car with more miles than many will like, and not entirely in stock condition.

I haven't actually decided what to do. I made a promise to someone about getting her a car when she grew up and suddenly it's here! So I might have to get rid of this to get that...

I don't even know where the enging sn is. Give me a location and I'll look at it.
