relay xvi

I have an 86 Euro spec car. Can anyone tell me what relay xvi controls? The problem I have is the car wont shut down by the ignition switch with this relay in and car will stay running if its inserted until I pull it and switch ignition off.(when this relay is out everything starts fine, car runs and able to switch it off) I haven't driven the car with the relay out yet, could i cause any damage? I don't think its the relay as iv used it elsewhere fine e.g horn, don't think its the switch as this works with relay out. Iv cleaned all ground points under dash and fuse panel and I'm lost as to what could have caused this. if anyone has ever had a sI'milar problem please don't hesitate to post.

XVI is the EZF relay for the Spark ECU. It is a regular SPST relay - though on some models a fuse tester relay may be mounted there - these are SPST relays with the fuse tester added on - functionally equivalent as a relay.

The car should not run without this relay... are you sure you have the right one - look at the pointer next to the XVI label - where does the little arrow point? to the relay you mean? the labeling swaps sides so the arrows really matter...!

If your car runs without this relay you have a bigger problem.

If its in fact a different relay which one?

It sounds as if the cause is something keeping the ignition active by linking (30) and (15).

When you turn the car off and it keeps running - do the headlights & brake lights still work?

After you turn the car off with the relay out - what happens when you plug it back in - does the dash light up in bulb test as if you turned the key to ignition?

relay xvi

yes I have looked at the arrow and it is relay xvi it is pointing to. Its the relay with the fuse tester on it. what could cause 30 and 15 to be linked when the relay is in?starter motor? to answer your question about what happens when i plug relay back in. Basically the car works as normal when its out.start-up to shut down. With it in, i can turn to position 1 and turn on and off radio, if i turn to position 2 and turn back to off, all lights stay on but radio will turn off/on with the ignition key, same when i turn to starter and go to turn off, car will stay running all lights are on but radio switches off.when i pull relay and shut down everything goes out and put back relay no lights are on at the dash. After cleaning the pod iv also noticed that my fog lights now come on also at position 2 and there not on at the switch! could this be where my problem is?before this issue i have only changed bulbs at fog lights and a brake light.could something here be causing this?

When the car continues to run on try removing relay XXV - does that shut it down also?

Try swapping relay XXV with the horn relay and leaving XVI in - what happens?

relay xvi

OK,went to start car a while ago after having battery on charge.didn't swap any relay but now car wont start. I have noticed when I crank her the voltmeter bottoms out.it just drops down to below 10. Don't think this was happening before. Id like to try swapping relays and see if that solves the problem but I have this issue now. I must have gremlins in there or something!could all this be connected?this problem is going from bad to worse. Thanks for all the suggestions you have been posting Alan.

These failure modes are quite likely to drain the battery - somthing isn't shutting down as it should. Just charge the battery up (or replace) and you will be back where you were...
