1986.5 Won't even turn over
HELP!! I have a 1986 that had problems lately that would not even turn over. Turn the switch on, lights come on, buzzer come on, But when the ignition switch is turned, NOTHING. The alarm system had given me an issue a couple months ago. It killed the battery and had to be jumped off.
I believe the alarm has me locked out. Any help on resetting the alarm would be appreciated. |

Disconnect the battery ground wire, fully charge the battery, try again.
I have an old alarm in one of my cars, nobody could get it started, and I wiggled a tin box (its some kind of motion trip) thats part of the alarm and it started right up. |

Where is this box?? I was in it the other day. Ran great. Got out of it to get a hair cut. Got in it and it would not turn over. Had someone take me to my house to get my truck, came back later that day, was going to check the fuses, before i did, I reached over, put the key in and it cranked right up. Irritated the ????. well you know.
Let my daughter borrow it and it did the same thing but I can't get it to crank up now. |

Mine was up at the front of the engine compartment on the drivers side screwed to the inside of the fender sort of, but with alarms they often hide the parts. I don't know enough about alarms to just yank the darn thing, and it could be any of the alarm bits messing up too.
When it won't crank to really fix it you are going to need to trace the wiring and find out where the alarm starter interrupt relay is spliced in. Getting rid of my old alarm was about a grand all total, and its not finished. |

I just need to get it Running again. The car is pristine. Just little things like this are aggravating me. I am going to let her go. If you know someone looking for a nice car. The inside looks like new, the outside, other than the front spoiler on a scale of 1-10 I would say 8.5, Could use two front tires, other than that, It has 92000 miles, It has been in the garage most of its life from what I can tell. The engine runs great, except with these pestky items lately.
Stay in touch. I will let you know if I get her cranked! |

Watch out, the 928 can sense rejection and get mean on you. Best to buy it some nice tires or something.
![]() One of the "features" of a 928 is that it can look great, run pretty good, and be in serious need of $10k in repairs. Post some picts and prices, people are always looking. Not much good though that I can do you since I am in SoCal. |

The whole flip thing got pretty ugly on rennlist. One of the "nice" guys back east hit some hard times and had his 928 repoed and sold at auction for like $4k. Guy that bought it knew and cared zero about 928's showed up on rennlist for some help and trying to sell it for $10k or so, and somebody recognized the car, and it got nasty.
I don't like flipping, but to me its not the flipper I put the blame on, its the old owner that foolishly let the car go cheap, and the new buyer that pays a premium for a car with no history etc. I can't honestly say I wouldn't flip a 928 if I got the chance, so griping is just sour grapes that I did find or act on the deal first. |

If I had more money than sense, I would like to keep the 928 and own a 911 track car and a 911 Street car. But since I have More sense than money, I do the next best thing. I buy cars that need a little tender loving care, something I don't have to sink thousands upon thousands into. (well sometimes I do) Basically is sound but needs that special attention. I don't try to make a killing.
I did not get into this trying to make money, I traded a 1978 L82 4 Speed anniversity model Corvette for this 928S. I loved the way it handled,It looked like a space ship and emotion took over. I still wouldn't mind owning one outright, but it takes a cash flow to support the habit. Cars are like DRUGS, you keep sinking money into them with out a substaining cash flow, you end up on the street. This gives me a chance to put a little love back into a car and send back out better than I received it. I am sorry that some see what I do as bad, but I see some people seeing it as jealous. I get to have fun doing what I love to do, and that is get to drive exotic cars, learn how to take care of them without pulling ALL my hair out in the process. I have fell for a car (PORSCHES) that is a mechanical marvel in the sense that it is like driving a GoCart on Steroids. My real profession is helping others start up unFranchises, but I cannot seem to be able to work more than 20 hours a week. So the Cars are fun and keeps me out of trouble, except when I "P" somebody off doing what I enjoy. If money was all I was after I would open a car lot. Which I have thought about. But then the fun would be gone. So people either Love Me or Hate me. Whichever, I am still an Enthusist just like your self. If I wasn't I would just PAY SOMEONE TO DO THE WORK! You Know, Live is Too Short to find Complaints, Lets enjoy the jouney. I help those that are looking and I help those that are selling. Everybody's happy! at least most. Hope everyone has a wonderful Day! Lets solve some problems. And Pay It Forward! |

Well it sounds most like a starter circuit issue.
When you turn the key to start and 'nothing happens'- do the dash lights still glow brightly? if yes its the starter circuit - if the lights all go out - you have battery/connection issue. You may need terminals cleaning, new ground strap or a new battery - take the battery in for a chaeck first. If the lights stayed bright I'd start by swapping the starter relay for an alternate one (try the horn relay). See if that helps - if not it may be the wiring to the relay from the ignition switch (unlikely), the wiring from the relay to the starter (possible) or connections or faults in the starter/solenoid (on the starter). If you want to learn how to take care of these cars you need to learn about electrical maintenance its half the battle... I don't think your issue is related to the alarm - it does not disable the starter. Alan

It seems the Germans had to operate everything with a switch and solenoid.
The lights do glow brightly and nothing happens when you turn the switch. The alarm had been giving some issues, that is why I was thinking that. It killed the battery the Day My wife took the car to work and I was Two states away. She doesn't want to drive it again because it let her down. I will see if I can find a schematic for the 928 and chase out what you recommended. I do appreciate you help. I have spent the last 3 -4 days chasing electrical problems out on a 91 911 Cab I have. You have any pics of your 94 928. That is the special Baby . or is it 95? Bet that one with a manual is one bad puppy. |

Found out on my 84 today that the PO ran a wire back to the fuel pump post to get the input signal to the brain to fire the injectors, and bypassed the CE panel relay and fuse. Wow the gas sure comes out FAST. ;(
If your going to do 928's, you will have to buy a set of manuals. Jim Morehouse has them on a CD, but I don't see how you can get by without a paper copy for electrical work. |

I bought the CD. Your right though. You need a paper copy.
Thanks for the help. Wish ALL people were more helpful and not so critical. What other cars do you have? |

My fleet ...
1999 Continental Pearl white/linen family car. 1991 Mustang white/grey, trusty beater about to go to my son. 1983 US 928S 5 spd Silver/black, the nice one except for not quite running. 1984 Euro 928S auto, running like a champ, salvage title, engine getting pulled tomorrow. 1985 Euro 928S 5 spd, 195k miles Black/misc mouth open waiting for the 84 motor. Early plan was to put a Euro hybrid motor into the 83, which currently has a grumpy 145k mile motor and a tranny with a bad input bearing and need of syncros. 84 was purchased as a parts donor car, but the 85 turned up with a timing belt failure at the right time so I bought it, and got the idea of dropping the 84 motor into it stock to get a taste of how I like the Borg 5 spd and the power of the base Euro motor. Depending on how that goes the 83 will either stay pretty much stock and have its parts rebuilt, or get a hybrid motor and a newer Borg tranny. Hybrid motor is a big valve Euro head , high lift long duration cams, and the larger diameter Euro intake, combined with a US 85/86 5.0L short block. Lately on ebay some manuals have been sold in sections, you could just buy the set of electrical diagrams. |

The 5 Sped will be fun! The auto is fun, but stick! Couldn't be better. This 911 I have hopefully will be the last auto. It's fun and my wife likes it, but still not the same. If the 928 had not left the wife high and dry, she liked it. She says she will stick to her Toyo Solara.
Send some pics sometime. We are going to have a piture page on our site , you will have to post some pics. Check out my shell site, and give me some input. If you don't mind. It still is in construction phase. www.exotichotwheels.com |
