OT: Boostlogic Supra 6-speed runs new record: 8.49 (video)
|
Are those Supra motors like a rock or what?
So is it considered "legal" to run an 1/8 and quote what it might be in a 1/4? or do I have it wrong? |
Supra & most import drag racers commonly run 1/4 only. The lights on the board at about 1/8th mile show the reaction time, then correct to the 1/4 time after the car passes throught he 1/4 traps.
Supra engines are stout: good for about 900rwhp before you need to build them up with stouter rods. Pistons are forged & ceramic coated from the factory. But, to get to 900rwhp, you're gonna spend 20k in engine mods: engine management system, fuel system (pumps, rails lines, injectors, regulator, return), turbo system & manifold (3-4k), exhaust & downpipe (1-2k), Intercooler & pipes (2k), 1k i gauges & meters, 2-3k in clutch upgrades, etc. Not a cheap route for sure. |
And they talk about turbo lag ya right.I heard no turbo lag there
|
Seemed like they were real careful to keep the turbo spooled up.
Did kinda scoot down the track though. |
The nitrous is used to help spool such a large turbo. Very impressive...must be on high octane race fuel at those boost levels.

Give SW credit, that IS a standard supra 6speed gearbox....lots of shifting & about 1300rwhp according to Chris.
This car has anti-lag programmed into the AEM EMS (engine management system): you can floor it & it will stay shy of the limiter but still run fuel to run about 30psi by the time you release the clutch: keeps you from having to stand on 3 pedals at the same time. :) |
Seriously though, having a turbocharger on a 928 is the most fun I've ever had in a car. You still keep that great V8 driveability, but to be sucked back into your seat at any speed, while you're pulling on modified Z06's or just playing around on the highway: is quite a rush...like I never experienced in an SC 928.
Probably the most disappointing ride I ever drove was behind the wheel of a 470rwhp SC Trans-am with a built engine: It kinda pulled, but all you heard was exhaust & there was not graduating suction like in a turbo. Then, the owner drove my 320rwhp 944T (this is back 12 years ago) & was delighted...it's all about interpretation I guess. |
Massive smooth power is fast, but IMHO not as much fun as quirky power that comes on slightly unpredicted, cam or lag, where that last bit of direct control is absent.

Yes, here's a vid of the anti-lag at work on a previous trip to the track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRfi-kb9S2s
|
My old 944T did something, I think opened the waste gate until some RPM was reached on the motor or maybe some load level, then closed it to ZAP the turbo up to speed quickly. Was a fun car, not sure I miss it all that much.

Anti-lag is really hard on exhaust parts...limits the life big-time. There are some Audi Quattro videos out there with launches that have to be seen to believed!
I second Mark's opinion on the TC on the 928. It's all about sizing and matching. Nobody gets out of my car and thinks about turbo lag. The 928 is really not about drag racing anyway...more of a mid-range and top end setup...prime TC territory. |
Well, Boostlogic didn't build their record-setting IRS supra for long life: it's all about maintaining their record. :)
|
That's obvious! I wonder how well that car corners with the suspension setup. How many runs is that engine good for before requiring rebuild?
|
My favorite turbo lag video.
