hydro lock on fuel damage
GTS engine hydro locked by electrician messing with efi. Plugs were taken out and the engine still refuses to turn over and I'm talking about manual power beyond the starter motor. Any past experience with this scenario?
Junkie wants cheap price for motor, claims that it is worth over $400 just for the aluminum! (Turns out its the original engine from my GTS.) Diverdan |

I imagine that the engine has seized from sitting.

engine
#1: change the oil (probably 1/2 gas now)
#2: with spark plugs out, use a generous amount of WD:40, or PB Blaster & soak the tops of the pistons (between 5-10 seconds a squirt. Use a long extended tube/straw. Let the engine sit for at least a few days, then try it again. I helped a friend revive a boat engine that had hydrolocked & sat for a year:it worked, the boat runs great now (after a tune-up). Mark

Buy the motor if you can for $500 and wonder about it later. There is some chance that it will turn out to be junk, thrust bearing, rod through a cylinder wall, that kind of stuff, but its at least a 50/50 chance that at a minimum the crank or block can be saved and each of those are worth a grand or more right?
I wouldn't use WD40, skip straight to Marvel Mystery Oil, actually any "good" penetrating oil for a long good soak. Even then I think long term you are better off to open it up rather than see what happens if you can make it turn. |

Buy the engine and do the following:
Remove a spark plug from a cylinder where the piston is near the top of the stroke, break the ceramic end of the spark plug off, and weld on a high-pressure grease fitting. Install the modified spark plug back in place and pump grease in the fitting at a few hundred pounds of pressure. I am willing to bet that this motor will break free if you do this. I had a friend do this to a vintage tractor engine that had froze-up due to having not been run in years.....it worked! |

The electrician accidently filled the cylinder with fuel and tried to turn the engine over. This is when it seized. This occurred last summer and the engine was pulled and the customer sold a used engine. All this is hearsay as I haven't been able to get my hands on it yet. Guess I'll have to give the guy some money and have it shipped to my house.
Thanks for the other tips.... may work on my 440 ski boat motor back in Michigan Never hydro locked, just won't turn due to sitting too long. Everything looks clean as a whistle and properly oiled on the ski boat. Diverdan |

I'm talking purely out of my "hat", but I don't see a starter motor bending any rods etc., more like a cylinder or cylinders full of fuel will have all the oil washed off them. You might not have any permanent damage unless somebody forces the motor to turn.

Question Answered on 944 board. Valves can be bent with a cylinder full of fuel on cranking! Makes sense to me so I'll believe the anecdotes. I'll bet on this scenario. Should secure the engine tonight.

I can picture ONE valve getting bent under just the right circumstances, but a bent valve is a slap on the wrist compared to anything serious. Heads will need to come off at some point for a serious inspection anyway.

Done Deal! With the timing belts off, the engine turned as it should for a partial revolution, no play longitudanly with the crankshaft, clean exhaust and clean water passages (no water pump.) Could be a valve problem...not a big deal. So my GTS though a project is no longer relegated to hot rod only. YAHOO! Next fall I'll tear into it.

Congrats!
My bet goes on timing belt slipped. |
