Can Someone Educate Me On Buying A 928 S4?
I'm thinking about buying a 928 S4 and wanted to know which year are the best? And what things to look out for? Any help would be appreciated.

I've bought three 928's so far, my guess is that you start getting good at it around five or six.
![]() 1) Know what you want. 2) Find a good mechanic. 3) Arrange your finances. 4) Be patient, plan on saying no to a few. Know what you want. The 928 is an icon of automotive style, with several different personalities. Its easy to think the 928 is such a wonderful car that you will be happy with any nice example, but it is also a very demanding car such that only by finding exactly what suits you will you be able to put up with it. Attend one of the regional meetings and get to know a few cars. Find a good mechanic. Most of us would be toast without a good mechanic. Even the guys that do their own wrenching from time to time need the help of a veteran 928 mechanic. Notice I don't say a good Porsche mechanic, they need to know and work on many 928's otherwise you will end up paying for them to learn. There is a lot of online help, but for the average person without a good 928 mechanic they may regret diving in deep. Arrange your finances. Know your budget, and be ready to pounce. Its important to buy the nicest 928 that you can, and its also important not to run out of money after you own a 928 that NEEDS something. Don't let the tail wag the dog, make an honest assessment independent of what 928's are selling for. You don't have to spend it all, but its a good idea to set your budget outside the heat of the moment. Be patient, plan on saying no to a few. Pretty much nobody sells a really nice 928, EVER. People die, buy houses, get married, have kids, lose their job, but 95% of the cars on the market are for sale because of problems too expensive to fix. Very few people can judge the condition and value of a 928 on their own, so a PPI (pre purchase inspection) by that good 928 mechanic is essential before making any offer. Have you driven a 928 yet? Whats your preference, auto or 5 spd? Good luck. |

Many thanks for the info. I've driven one many years ago. At this point I'm 50/50 on a auto/stick.

Just my personal view, but I think I see both sides of the AT/5 spd question, and for me most of the time where I would prefer an AT, heavy traffic etc., I'd just as soon be driving something else like our continental. The 928 is just for raising hell.
