Cluster fixing time, odo gear etc.
Everything in my cluster except the odometer and MPG are working, speedometer seems to be too fast by about 20%, but it works 99% of the time. Also there is a dead spider down in one corner that needs removing. This thread is just to collect my thoughts before I start on the repairs, so I will be looking through the WSM, just haven't done it yet, and adding info and links.
How do I calibrate the speedo, short of sending it out? All my warning lights are in German, maybe I should switch the speedo to Km? Who is the best source for odometer gears, and what does my 85 Euro with US MPH speedo need? Dangler, look on renn for a technical write-up by Dwayne w/in the last 6 weeks or so. It is for an 84, but it is very, very nicely documented and some is bound to apply to your project.
Apparently, also a few speedo-related circuit rivets actually become a little loose and can be soldered-over for repair of intermittancy. Most of all, please take some pictures during the process, especially how to access and change the odo gear. Best of luck on it.

Changing the odometer gear is actually easy after you get the cluster out. There are several sources for the gears (the 944's have the same problem). I think i got mine on ebay..you just have to know which speedometer you have because there are different gears...there are only a couple of screws on the gauge itself and it's pretty obvious how the new gear goes in (after you clean the goo that remains of the old one)

I have the brand new odogears for $27.50. There were some floating arounds - mention no names - that were sticking once installed.
One way of calibration is remove the needle and rest it at the correct position after checking with a GPS. If you lightly push it into place and then drive the car you can eyeball where it should be and make the adjutments. Works pretty well. If not send it to Palo Alto Speedometer Repair and spend $100+ Roger
