hood release cable tips?

the car went straight through its VA safety check today, although its steering wheel had to be tightened because it was about to fall off...

after i got home i was going to start working on things and went to pop the hood. the release seems to be pulling several inches of cable into the car and will not release the hood. i went under the car and manualy grabbed the release cable and opened the hood. i lubricated the cable and tried the release again. nothing, i can feel the cable moving a little bit when someone else pulls it when im at the front of the car. i checked to see if the cable slipped at the end and it hadnt... any ideas would be greatly appreciated

thank you

Jeff
