87 S4 engine misfire on cyls 2 and 7: fuel injector question
So I've narrowed the '87's misfire to cyls 2 and 7 by systematically pulling and replacing ignition leads at the distributors. It seems that 2 and 7 are the magic numbers as when they are connected/disconnected the car seems to run the same. All the cyls are getting good spark so (I pray) it must be the injectors or in the wiring. Is there an easy way of checking injector function that doesn't involve any fancy tools? I pray that I don't have 2 bum cyls in this engine or bad valves on those cyls, if the injectors turn out to be good I guess I'll have to take it to a shop for a compression test. Fingers crossed in a big way that this doesn't turn out to be the case.

Start with a small rubber hose. Hold one end up to your ear with the motor running and the other end next to the suspect injector, you should hear it clicking open and closed, compare the sound to the other injectors.
Noid light, less than $10 at many auto parts places, don't ask for a Porsche one, ask for one to fit your 92 Mustang (same Bosch type). Pull the plugs and inspect them, color, wet, etc. While the plugs are out do a compression test. A cheap compression tester can work fine, but a screw in type at the minimum, and one with a snap on/off hose and adapter may be easier to use. If that sounds too hard just check the plugs. |
