1984 starts/runs.....dies!! HELP!!

I have a recently bought a 1984 928 that was sold as non-running w/74K miles. Got it home added new battery, started right up. Runs great for about 5 minutes then it just dies and will not re-start. It will restart with starting fluid though, but only until it burns off. If I disconnect battery and wait a few hours it will again run for 5 and die. Tried MAF unplugged would barely run at any point, so I assume it is ok. Checked FI with noid light, when first starting light is strong and flashing as it supposed to. Once it gets to the stage of dying light goes dim and stays on constant. Found an extra .106 box and plugged it in...car would not run at all so I assume the extra box is junk. At this point I am out of ideas..Please help!

Thats good information, RE the noid light, it means injection system from the "fuel" side is working and that the trouble is on the electrical side. I think I would replace the O2 sensor next (not too expensive if you use a universal and splice into old wiring), but wiser heads may have better suggestions here.

I agree on fuel supply. PErhaps the startup injector is enouigh to keep it running until the system warms up. Then when the start up injector shuts off, it dies. Letting it cool off allows the start up injector to activate again.

Check the fuel pump relay and the fuel filter to make sure it's not clogged.

Ok took 3 steps back today, checked filter, pump and both appear fine due to the large amounts of unrestricted fuel flow through them. It ran longer today than ever, but twice I seemed to notice that the volt meter was down at 9-10 volts it ran great as soon as I revved it up to see if alt was working, alt seemed to cycle on and car died?? would not restart. did this twice. So I started checking connections at the alt went to start and now have nothing! when you turn the key onto the start position all of the warning lights on dash go out and nothing....Checked battery connection and can assure you thats not it. I have 12.9 volts to the starter and the alt. Seems like it is an ignition problem?? When you cycle the key from off to the starter engage position the warning lights on the dash only come on for less than a second and then go out?? now I am really stumped!!

Electrical part of the ignition switch is a typical failure point. Can create a lot of different problems.

Reasonably easy to buy a replacement and install.
