I'm just curious if anyone can explain the benefit/drawback and general difference between the "piston oil squirter" engine used in early '87's and the one used in later S4's. Also if there is a way of checking whether your car has one or the other that would be useful I suppose.

benefit = cooler piston temps ( advantage for boosted applications )
Drawback = Greater aeration of engine oil and adds to windage. You can get an idea of whether or not you have the squirters by looking at the s/n. Some say that the folding wing 87's were all squirters. To be honest, no one really knows for sure. It was only the early 87 cars but no one knows exactly when they stopped.

Opinions vary, but it wouldn't make up my mind either way. If it was "great" people would find a way to add it and Porsche would have kept it.

Actually Mike, Lindsey racing has stated that they can add them for me to an 86 block.

Yes I am thinking about having it done. running high boost on factory internals can generate lots of heat.
