I put CF Scoops on my CF hood
Got a pair of CF hood vents from Carbontrix HERE
2 hours later I have holes in the hood. With my headers now wrapped, I'm hoping to bring some cold air in and shorten my air intake. I am taking out the K&N from the air box and sealing it up air tight with out a filter at all. Then placing the smaller K&N cone filters directly on the airbox ends. Cones will end up right underneath the vents. I plan on using heat safe foam to "Seal" the hood around the cones. Foam will be glued to the underhood heat liner I got from Robert Budd. Idea is less distance = less resistance to air flow with colder air than I would get in front of the engine. I was currently pulling air from behind the E-fan instead of in front of the radiator. This will also give me more room to tinker with out having to take off the tubes. Should have an after pic of the intake after I get the engine back in the car in a couple weeks. BTW Hood is wet from being rinsed off after drilling and cutting. And now the poor quality phone pics... :D Hood: http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-.../IMAGE_323.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-.../IMAGE_324.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-.../IMAGE_325.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-.../IMAGE_326.jpg http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-.../IMAGE_330.jpg Cones: http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-6/761785/Cones.jpg |
Your old location sucked and your new location is a little better. IMO the scoops should have been mounted further forward and turned the other way in order to allow the hot air to escape and also it would create a lower pressure area under the car. This would increase flow through the radiator and also decrease the amount of air going under the car. Why do you have those cone filters on there anyway? At this point you may be committed to the orientation of the scoops. At least tie the intake tubes into the scoops somehow.
Is that a spray paint cap in place of a washer res. cap? |
I like it!

Bingo! I replaced it with a stock red cover recently. I thought of putting the vents the other way to remove heat, but it would drag the heat up past the cones, unless I left them up front. My engine runs cold as it is, I was more worried about lowering the intake charge temperature than removing heat from the engine. I went with the cones in the first place..honestly.. just to be a little different. Just can't fight the rice in my blood. I truly have no taste, but I admit it and embrace it with a smile. Jeezz.. I have canards on my shark and you have to ask these questions? :D |
About the MSD
Hey N20:
Side question: how did the MSD box work out? Very noticeable difference, or not really worth it? I had really good results with the basic MSD 6A on a completely different type of engine (old points ignition, 4-banger, British). My low end cruising (in my stock 4.5 CIS) is not all that smooth. Didn't see anyone else talking about the MSD for the mechanical fuel injection on this board. |
I understand why you put them there. I'm just saying that by installing them in that manner you are shoving more air under the car. If you truly want to reduce your charge temp. you could get rid of the cones altogether or at least place them in front of the radiator if you insist on keeping them.
BTW, have you weighed the CF hood yet? Andrew Olson bought one and found that it actually weighed more than the stock hood. If your after the CF look there are alot of vinyl applique's (sic) that are available. You could use that on your mirrors for instance. |

The CF hood weighed about the same as the stock hood. I will weigh it again now that it has the scoops, but at the time I think it was about 11 pounds before the hood liner was added. I think the stock hood is around 12 or 13 pounds? I remember it was only about 1 or 2 pounds since the stock hood is so light to begin with. Not really worth it unless you want the cosmetic look of it. Mine came as a factory second with a couple light scratches in it. It was cheap so I went for it. Scratches buffed out for the most part. The scoops are just riveted in so I can try them both directions one weekend and see if the car feels different pushing or pulling air. At 80mph, that could be a good bit of air pushing down, hadn't thought of it that way prior. |
Factory second? Where did you get it? There used to be a company that made two styles of CF hoods and a Cf dash for the 928. They went out of business a couple of years ago. Is there someone else building these now or is it a holdover from a few years ago?

It was on ebay. They had 2 at the time. The other was perfect and went for about $400. Think I paid about $230 shipped for mine. Not sure if they were hold overs or not. They were still making hoods for other makes. I can dig through my PAYPAL account to see if I can find out who they are and email them to see if they can still make them, if you're interested.
I will say that CF hoods ingeneral are a PITA to fit, and the 928 hood being so long and narrow is horrible. If you have the slightest bow in the hood, you cannot straighten it out like you can with aluminium. My fit is decent but now where near perfect. |
When you get those cams be sure to take plenty of pictures, I've never seen a welded cam.

^Will do, I haven't seen or used one before either. They are all I'm waiting on to put the engine back in the car.

The under frame is fiberglass but follows the stock pattern. It made it hard to mount the struts. I have removed them. I am removing the rear hinges now and just going with hood pins front and back. Front are already installed.
