Cheap S4 will be at SharkToberfest
I took a quick look at this 88 S4 last night, 120k miles, fried paint on the top, from the sun apparently, no AC, interior a bit dry and rough, usual dash and pod nasties, and its an Auto, but the owner is moving to NY and wants it gone. Asking $6500, currently considering some lower offers from a couple locals. It should be at SharkToberfest with a sign or something. Auto and too much project to suit me, and I have no otherwise affiliation.
Autocheck is "ok", no odometer roll backs, but sounds like sometime in the past it was registered as "mechanical limit exceeded" which I read as odo gear broke, so it does not qualify for the title buy back thing. More important in my thinking is that it hasn't been driven 2k miles in the last 7 years since the new owner bought it. Its going to be a project, but it will sell to best cash offer by Saturday I think. Pictures taken at dusk, actual paint color is a metallic brown, and paint damage is middle of the car front to back, and its not going to buff out. ![]()

I didn't drive it when I heard there was a cash offer at $4k. The owner is a sharp guy, the car is unfortunate, and I have no idea how deep the problems might be, but it was deeper than I like to wade. It will be at Sharktoberfest, are you still thinking of buying it for $4k?

Do you guys have the owners address, phone # or any other contact info? I was at the Sharktoberfest today and didn't see that car or maybe it sold. I am interested in a 928 S4 project car. It is exactly what I want and I didn't want to spend more that 5K.

Just thinking, no matter who buys this car, fair chance all or most of us in SoCal will end up turning a wrench on it before its done.
![]() Whoever buys it, I'm in the City of Orange, and happy to watch and point out amusing details while you work, or call 911 for you. If you look totally helpless I might actually lend a hand, but I am kind of shy. I have no plans for now to make any offer myself. Until I finish parting out my parts car I can't bring another one home, and parting one car is not encouragement to do it again. Buying this one for $4k I think you would be hard pressed to make minimum wage parting it out, if it has no serious engine issues. |

Wow DANGLERB you must have no job to spend all your time and effort posting other people's vehicles. I found out from the owner that you didn't even drive the car. You are right about no plans to buy a project car>>the car you came in was pretty beat up! I can hardly respect your opinion when you didn't look at the engine, you didn't sit in the car nor did you drive the car. I think you have issues! SELLER BEWARE OF DANGLERB.

He said in his first post that he didn't drive the car and that he has no interest in it, why should the seller beware of him?

How can you form an opinion by looking at the outside of a car. And if he has no interest in it>>>then SHUT UP>>>Obviously he has no life because he is looking at cars that he can't afford....

If the owner was going to keep the car and try to fix or even part it, I would be 100% for helping him, but I don't sugar coat a car inspection. I try to give an honest opinion, and to caution, not bash, but the inspection is to serve the buyer.
IMHO a "test drive" by someone with as little experience as I have in driving different models is worthless. A PPI is essential with a good hour on a rack, and I saw no reason to make that sort of investment or waste the sellers time. Does anyone that has seen this car have any disagreement with anything I have said about it? The plain truth is that less than $8k right now will buy an S4 in better condition than this car would be in after spending $10k in repairs. OTOH I was thinking this morning if someone was into that style, this car would be a dandy candidate for a two tone paint treatment. Not that much work to pull the hood, sunroof, and hatch, mask off the rest of roof and paint the whole center of the car front to back with second color. Dunno, might work. ******************** I only work when I feel like it. True, I haven't refused to do an inspection for anybody that has asked me. "the car you came in was pretty beat up!" OUCH, I don't recall the seller making any inspection of my car at all. Its a 91 Mustang I've owned since new, gasp, I don't wash it or do squat with it except drive it. OTOH it has NONE of the problems of this car, and $500 would make it look like new which it already runs like. |

Just looking at the outside I could tell; Paint completely fried on hood, roof, and hatch, with some damage on other panels. Its clear coat metallic paint, so nothing cheap or easy will fix the paint. One strike. Dash, pod, seats, and likely more needs to be redone. Strike two. I ran an autocheck and the DMV smog history before I looked at the car, no real PM for 10 years is a DEEP hole to start filling with money. Strike three, parts car. I was prepared to buy it when I drove over, but it didn't take me 30 seconds to know it wasn't worth $4k to me. I doubt Mark would pay $2k for it, but I have no issues with somebody else finding it worth $4k to them. In fact I am sure YOU should buy it. Do you have interest in the car or are you a shill for the seller? |

I would trust Mike Ford a hell of a lot more than several other people here and on the other forum.
BTW - I think it was more like 5th grade through highschool for me Mike. My driver's license was my ticket out of that hell. |

So did anybody buy it?
I show the last smog test as 7/22/08, so any day now a new one will be required. |
