dubious electrics
I have been looking at the various circuits which don't work on my car, an 84 S2, and find that all the switches and relay contacts have the same problem. Black film all over. This is normally due to silver sulphide formation. So where does the sulphide come from. Discussion with a colleague suggests that leather being a protein, has sulphide groups in it, and it is possible that the lovely leather smell is the cause of the sulphide film..
its not good evidence, but inspection of identical age , identical Bosch relays from an old VW passat were in pristine condition. various cars had varying levels of leather trim. I'd like to hear from folk who had all fabric trim, and all leather trim, preferably from hot areas and cool temperate areas, even just how reliable the peripheral electrics were, eg window winders? better still does any one have the time and access to cary out a X ray microprobe study of a failed relay contact? |

My vote is garden variety carbon. The 928 has big chunks of aluminum, steel, copper and they seem like a corrosion factory, but I doubt more than trace amounts of sulfur find its way into switches from the leather.
Maybe there is some kind of simple test for the nature of the switch contact goo? |

with switches at less that $30 each......you'll find that they'll be changed out before the scientists figure out it's the leather...... ![]() --Russ
