A/T Problems 1983 928... Help....

I bought a 1983 928 3 weeks ago. She has performed Beautifully and I Love the machine!

I drove it to work last week, everything operating normally. After my shift, I left the parking lot and before I knew it, the 928 would Not shift into 3rd or 4th gear.

towed it to my neighbors shop and he flushed the tranny (Very Dark brown fluid, but did not smell burnt), replaced the Filter and gasket and added the correct amount of fluid...

Took it out on a test run... same !@#$% thing, It will not shift into 3-4 gears at all... not even trying too....

As if something broke while it was parked that day, turned off a switch... whatever.

Anybody have ANY idea what to do, test or change?

I would hate to sell the car (I know nothing about the A/T on this model or even removal).... I called on prices for used trannys... HOLY CRAP! The closest repair is 3 hours away in Tulsa at RennSport... I know the guy is good, but Expensive....

I appreciate any ideas or help.
Thanks.....

Keeb~

Check the transmission modulator for any internal leaks. Double check the fluid level. Fluid level must be checked after being driven with transmission fluid warmed up, car on level ground and in Park or Neutral. Fluid should be between the high and low marks. They are very sensitive to incorrect fluid levels. Do searches about transmission problems here and on Rennlist to learn more. Good luck!

The 928 isn't a cheap car, its maybe the finest GT ever made and its going to cost some money to keep one in nice running condition. The auto is the same as used in Mercedes Benz sedans of the same era, any shop that fixes the MB should have no troubles.

OTOH that isn't saying any shop, but any shop that is known for good work on a MB.

First talk to some of the guys that know the auto and see what they have to say.

If it needs an overhaul you might save some money by pulling it yourself and putting it back in.

Got a lead on a tranny... 50K miles on it... total labor and tranny is $1650.oo
.... I dont think I could beat that since rensports was 1600.oo just for the labor..

Make sure that the kick down switch at the bottom of the accelerator pedal has not shorted out. I added a kick down switch into my 928 and when I activated it by accident while parked, I could not get out of first.

How sure are you that the cheap shop will do good work? $1650 isn't cheap if its a down payment that doesn't fix anything. What will they do if the tranny has problems?
