Early 5 spd Clutch Kit

I have a '78 5 spd and I am going to need a clutch in the distant future. I can feel a little slippage ( tach will show a nice RPM increase but I don't feel it and then it slowly catches ) when pulling hard up steep highway on ramps.

While looking around on the net I can easily find 80-86 Sachs dual clutch kits but I don't see any for 78-79. Is there a difference in the dual clutches from 78-79 and 80-86?

AFAIK the 78/79 clutch is somehow different, but I don't know the details.

Have you looked it up in PET6 (free to download parts catalog from main Porsche web site).

I don't think its good to let the clutch go once its slipping, glazes the pressure plate and things get expensiver fast.

The intermediate plate is different on the 78/79 vs the 80 on for the dual clutch system

Thank for PET tip...

According to that document the following is different:

pressure plate - 928 116031 03
clutch plate 1 - 928 116 011 23
clutch plate 2 - 928 116 011 24
intermediate ring - 928 116 033 03
intermediate ring gear - 928 116 143 00

They do not list a repair kit for the 78-79 clutch :( Buying these separate is going to be pricey, any thoughts on kits for the early cars...

I've seen pieces for early clutches on ebay once in a while.

You probably do not need to replace the intermediate plate. You'll need both clutch disks, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. I did a clutch on an 82 and the parts from a known vender were ~700.00. There is someone who occationally sells new old stock on ebay.

Patience is your friend in looking for parts cheap, but driving the car is nice too.

If you need it now, start with Pelican and work your way around the rest of the suppliers.

Two weeks after I replaced my clutch I saw one sell on ebay for $200, but I was driving my car by then.
