Camshaft seized !

Just got done with an overhaul on my 81 euro 928 S. Started the engine and everything ran well. All os a sudden engine died. Turns out that the camshaft seized. Opened her up and the mechanic claims that a lifter caused the problem. Anyone ever heard of that ! Where would the problem have originated from ???

possibly a clogged oil feed , the cam will seize in the head, possibly the cam tower gasket was incorrectly installed. 9 Blocking the oil feed.
You might get away with installing a new cam tower and having the cams journals polished.
Really thought we need pictures.
If the heads were removed then the head gasket could also have been installed improperly.

What about the head gaskets? IIRC they can be installed on the wrong sides and block the oil passages? I'm not sure, can anyone confirm?

Whatever the reason it's a loss of oil supply.

I am going out to the mechanics to see or at least try and understand what happened ! The guy called me up last night and said that he took the head off and checked the lifter and freed it up and now everything is running as should be !!!!! Of course the timing belt had to be changed. Do you guys think any damage could've been done ? It sounds like either a bolt or washer got stuck in there and he removed the head took it out and started everything back up... you can never know its all closed up now !

If this is your only option for a mechanic, you might as well try to stay on good terms. You need to walk a fine line between letting him think he can get away with anything, and embarrassing him professionally over mistakes.

I wouldn't think a motor could be suddenly stopped without a few bits taking a lot of stress, and/or breaking, but not a lot of point in finding out as long as it works and he stands behind any future trouble.

What was the damage to the timing belt?

It is easy for a bolt to wind up inside of the cam tower and get wedged into the cam. You have to account for all the bolts and shake the tower out during a rebuild.
