Crank Gear Removal

is there a good technique for tapping the woodruff key down on the shaft? ('81 US 16V) I need to pull the crank gear to get the remains of the melted plastic belt cover from behind, but i've tapped on that woodruff key as hard as i dare (tried a nylon dowel but it was just absorbing too much of the impact)

It looks like it's moved some, but i have no idea how far down it can go. I can't budge the gear by hand so went and got some pullers, but don't want to start pulling until i know i can clear that key. (UPDATE: the puller got the gear off, see below)

I guess another question is do i need that cover anyway? i could cut up the remains and remove it without removing the crank gear.

That cover is the most important belt cover of them all. Just look at the bottom of your engine, that's where all the grease, oil and road grime gathers. That crap will ruin your belt if it gets in there. Can you run with out it? Sure. Would you want to? No.
Even with the cover removed, I think it would be tough to get the new belt in place.

Patience and the right tool. I've bent 3 of these $50 to $75 pulleys so far, but I am getting more careful. How about a picture?

so can you salvage the bushing when you bend the pulley? I can't find any drawings with that bushing listed anywhere so am afraid of messing it up...did you find the right tool?
