Duplicate keys & re keying locks
 

Now I know this is a useful piece if information. I could not find anyone locally here in Northern New Jersey to reproduce a 928 key and re-key 928 locks. There is a locksmith, Cy Drake, 106 Ridgedale Ave, Morristown NJ 07960, (973) 538-2737. They reproduce 928 keys & can re key 928 locks. It's not cheap but quick. They reproduced my original key, $27.00, re-keyed one door lock & the gas cap to fit my original key, $72.00 each & I got them the next day. I now have one key that fits everything.

Thats a good price for duping a key, did it include the new blank, shipping etc?

Can they cut a key from codes?

*** straight duping of our old keys often doesn't work well if the key is already too worn.

I live about 20 minutes away so I just drove there. The $27.00 to duplicate the key included the key blank. The key blank has a black plastic/vynl head. As far as cutting keys from a code, I don't know. They seem like nice people, just give them a call.

Excelent service - do not have to give up your key. Just send a photograph of both sides of the key blade and 6 days later a new key.

How much does Keys for Classics charge to dup a key including the blank & shipping?

IIRC about $45 which is great as most do not have access locally to a cutter like you have.
If you only have one key the last thing you need to do is trust it to the USPS.
New locks are about $1000.

Keys 4 Classics also cuts keys to the 'standard' depth, not whatever your old key happens to be, and they also cut to code. Dealers can make from the VIN, but many times locks are not original so the new keys don't match.

Never post pictures of your keys, but taking a few good digital shots of them and saving them is cheap insurance for lost keys.

I used them and the keys worked with no issues - they also provide original Porsche Huf keys (for extra cost) that fit into the lighted key head with the logo (you have to buy the head separately - mine came from Roger :) ), and they also have the Porsche red-plastic headed short key blank that our cars came with for gas cap etc. (altho' my long alarm key also opens that too).

I first tried the dealer to dup a key for my '78 & was told the car was too old. I don't know if this is true or not but thats why I started looking around. Danglerb has some good advice about taking pictures of the key/keys, I will do so this evening. This is a great forum, I don't think there is a question that someone on this form cannot answer. I found that all the original and replacement keys were a pain, and won't fit into normal key cases. If you order the red top huf brand non alarm key from keys for classics, cut off the plastic, you have a normal size key which you can drill a hole into and have a normal size key which fits into a key case. Instead of having a keychain with loose keys that chew a hole into your pocket. None of the alarm keys are full keys; they all need a 'head' added to them. I thought about welding something on, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
