Fuel tank support padding?

I don't care for the factory foam stuff used on the steel support frame for the fuel tank, and I've been looking around for something better for months.

First attempt was some 1/8" thick closed cell foam shelf liner. Excellent stuff, looks very durable, but was a bear to cut to fit the supports and glue it on, and proved a bit tight (too thick or not squishy enough) when the tank was bolted up.

Next I found some carpet runner, thin vinyl type sheeting, that appears to have excellent abrasion resistance, but how to stick the stuff on reliably?

So I am wandering the aisles looking at two sided tapes, and all of a sudden I see the perfect item, or so I am thinking so far without trying it, Gorilla tape. This stuff is "like" duct tape, but not a gooey adhesive, and its STRONG. I plan to use it directly on the support frame after painting, a single layer stuck to the frame between it and the fuel tank with the edges rolled over and stuck to the metal frame.

Please don't forget to keep us posted on how this works out as I may want to use this stuff when replacing the fuel tanks on one of my other cars.
