Which relay are you concerned with? There is the fuel pump relay that is activated during startup and if you have an automatic transmission there is the park/neutral safety relay.

To bypass either you need to jumper the 30 and 87 connectors.

There actually is a Starter Relay, but can't think of which one it is off hand. Mine is actually jumped since I can't seem to find the reason the replay isn't energizing after key is on.

The starter is powered directly from the battery and it is activated by the ignition switch sending power to the starter solenoid. The only time this circuit goes through a relay is when you have an automatic. The 5 speeds have a factory installed jumper at this relay connection. If your 81 is an auto and the relay is OK, check the electrical connections in your shifter assembly.

Yes, forgot to mention Automatic only. Manuals are already jumpered at the Relay location. I just went through the same thing. Starter not turning when ignition key turned on. I jumped mine and the starter turned via key( as DPW said, soleniod activated). My starter and soleniod are fine. My problem is probably an old alarm fiasco. To check your starter, you can always jump at the post under the hood, this will tell you right away if starter/soleniod is bad.

I found my diagram. 5th Relay from the top right row. This is the Starter Relay on an Auto.

Where are the switches for P and N?

OP's car is an AT.

It's in the linkage under the shift lever.

From '82 on there is a real starter relay - earlier than that AT cars used a relay in the starter circuit to disable starting when the transmission was not in park/neutral - a quite different function more of a starter disable relay.

'starter relay' bridges (30/87) installed in a <'82 are to defeat the neutral safety disable and were installed stock in MT cars. 82 and on - if that same relay bridge were installed the car would crank continually until the battery was dead - not very useful.

Instead a heavy duty jumper/bridge would need to be made up to jump terminals 86 and 87 so ther starter solenoid is controlled directly by the ignition switch as in early cars This is not really good practice and stresses the ignition switch terminals.

A 30/87 bridge used temporarily or a 30/87 jumper with a switch built in could be used to test for starter operation. Most likely issues are a fault in the neutral safety switch that grounds terminal 85 when the transmission is in a safe to start posiition. If this switch is disconnected or missadjusted on an AT car it will not start. Either bridge set will enable starter function to be tested in this case.
