new/old engine going back together
got the damaged Euro 4.5L out, disassembled, and cleaned up.
yes, 7 bad pistons/rings....... I had one set of new in the box Euro pistons/rings left, so in they went. the cylinders were in very good shape, no scratches or evidence of the piston/ring disaster that I removed. I normally would not do this build without more attention to detail, such as checking every clearance with every part, but the block is a tolerance group one and so are the NIB pistons. rod bearings were re-used, although I would normally replace these. this is a really cheapo build, only because I am building another engine (stroker) and this is just a stop-gap engine for the time being. The stroker will be very time consuming (my last one had about 500 hours of block work in it), so I am concentrating my efforts on it, as opposed to this "quickie" build......the rest of the engine (above the deck) will be parts used on the stroker and transferred to the stroker short block when it is completed. Assembly was pretty much a straight forward thing....put the new pistons on the rods, oil the entire piston/rings, install ring compressor, "lubriplate" the rod bearings, put rubber hose on the rod bolts, use the wooden hammer handle to tap the pistons into the cylinders, put the rod caps on and install the rod nuts. the rod nuts are one time use only, so they will be replaced before the rest of the engine assembly gets underway...... For now, until I get new rod nuts and an engine gasket set, this is as far as I will go with it. More later....... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to Dave Lomas at Motorsports for these...!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() --Russ

How do you tell the block is tolerance group 1?
Rod nuts really need to be replaced? I guess if you need to wait on gaskets might as well. |

tolerance group is stamped above each cylinder on a small tab (in the valley). you will see nothing, 1, 2, or 3, depending upon which one it is. some blocks could have different tolerance group in different cylinders--not all the same--according to what I have read. Mahle piston packaging will be marked as well. Factory pistons will have a stamped number on the top. Yes, according to FWMs, the rod nuts are one time use only. They are to be replaced each time you remove them. $2 a piece from Roger. rod bearings should also be replaced, but mine were OK--not great, but typical for an engine that probably has over 100,000 miles on it. if I were to run this motor for a long time, I would invest in a set of new bearings (cheap insurance). I may just put some in anyway, the more I think about--mostly depends on my budget for next month. main bearings are a different deal, as you must separate the block sections and then re-glue it back together upon assembly. crank end play was within limits, so I didn't feel the need to break the block apart. As I said before, this is just a cheapo rebuild using parts I already have while I get the stroker parts together over the next year...... Trust me, it's not my usual, very thorough, engine build. ![]() --Russ
