holiday project--look what I found.....

holiday project (among others) was to pull the sick, tired 4.5 L engine out of my Euro.

I suspected a bad piston or at least a broken ring in #8, as it's compression numbers were 35 psi down from the rest, and there was considerable blow-by in the crankcase.

Well, Russell (my 13 year old) and I finally got down to business and pulled the motor out Christmas Eve......well into the evening, finishing around midnight. Russell did most of the work, following the step by step in the FWMs while I did the heavy lifting. He did a great job, often reminding me of short cuts that I would take but not listed in the directions.....

Today's activities involved engine tear down and pressure washing the engine compartment and short block. Every thing came clean, we removed the cam towers/heads/fuel-intake system/accessories--no blown headgaskets, and it was on to removing the piston/rod assemblies, starting with #8.

What I found was not just one broken ring land, but two....with a broken top compression ring. The two broken rings lands were one on top of the other, with the oil holes on the oil ring land exposed---there's your blow by problem!!!!

It didn't get any better from here.

Only #2 piston had no damage, the rest were either broken ring lands or compression rings or both. 7 out of 8 was a heck of a thing to find.....

Some pics below---

this is #8--two broken ringlands

pistons/rods and lots of little "other" pieces

this was #4--very typical of the damage on 6 pistons

What causes that, detonation?

maybe.....although can't imagine it being that bad.....

always ran premium in the tank, with Chevron fuel injector cleaner once a month. Never heard a knock or rattle out of it....

#8 developed issues about a month after I brought the car home, but I was sure surprised to see the rest of the damage....

Funny thing is, some of the pistons that had a broken ringland did not have a broken top compression ring---it was very random.

Last one I had broke up like this was a 426 wedge MOPAR with factory cast pistons and the heads shaved so close I had to notch the pistons .150"......Darn thing broke ringlands right and left, seemed like a changed pistons twice a month when I was racing it.

Sure looks like detonation to me. Maybe the timing was too far advanced.

hey russ, you forgot my contributions. . How does the saying go, righty tighty lefty loosy. I will begin my compression test tomorrow and provide the results on PParts. I hope I can get this drivers seat out before then, the gears and motors are rusted out so I am hacking away bit by bit. Hope you guys had a great Christmas.

Sorry Adam, yes, your help in keeping the two Russells in line was greatly appreciated....!

The timing wasn't too far advanced, about 36 degrees total in. Of course, the gas we get these days isn't great, and 28 year old parts doesn't help either......

Sure was a surprise-----

I know your problem - that damn beer bottle in the picture with the pistons! They always seem to get lodged in the cylinders then bang! You're rings are toast!

Wish it was that simple------

every piston that was damaged was broken on the opposite side of the spark plug, leading me to believe that it may have been under-fueled......

or just plain crappy pistons.
