Instrument Cluster! Please HELP!

I have an 84 Euro 928s with 4.7 LH-Jetronic system.

I need an instrument Cluster, and since there seems to be a lack of:

928.641.114.34 or 928.641.103.34 out there can I use one from a different year,

does Auto/manual matter, euro vs. US connections issues?

Any insight would be of great help.

Thanks :mad::mad::mad::confused::mad::mad::mad:

Do you need the whole cluster or is there something about yours that isn't working? The foil circuit boards for the 84 are NLA as far as I know.

There is not a cluster in it at all.

928 inter has a new 85/86 euro cluster. Not sure if it will fit.

Thats the problem, no one knows if it will work or not. Can I wire in something else, or rewire what I have to accommodate whatever.

The tach needs to be from a two distributor car, US or Euro, but I am not 100% sure of anything else.

The cluster out of my 84 Euro is in a "bit" of limbo status, sending you PM to discuss it.

The best fit would probably be a cluster from a late 84 to 86 twin dizzy 16v Euro.
Most clusters are specific to the year and also to US & ROW.
84 to 86 Euro's are rare over here but not in Europe and I am keeping an eye out for one for you.
I have a lead on a US cluster and it may be worth a try to see what works and what does not.
Once it arrives I will lend it to you so we can test some theory and narrow the choice somewhat. You will need some patience me thinks 8>)

Thanks ROG100, I responded to your PM Danglerb, and thanks so far. Not much left to do in getting this ol' Shark back in the water. :D

mrtiffen,
There is a 928 GTG in Austin this Saturday - are you going?
I may be able to bring the cluster with me.
You do not have to come in a 928.

Adam--this would be a deal for you to consider, if your budget allows.

I would go but I'm busy trying to put together a truck deal. if I get it completed, we might truck -pool over there for the day......(?) I could at least get Roger to bring some rod nuts and an oil pan gasket to put the 4.5L short block together.

i'm going thru same challenge, and found wiring and clusters are year specific. 1982 thru '84 were the same, and '85s were different. look on ebay in Germany there are a couple of clusters right now. Of course the almight American dollar isn't worth as much as the Euro.

928worldwide 01-20-2010 06:53 PM

This is always a problem. I wonder how hard it would be to manuf. the foil?

neil30076 01-20-2010 07:08 PM

Or make up a circuit board/ harness to accept the 84 - 86 wiring harness and convert to a more common, available 82 - 83 cluster. Fab'ing up a pcb is fairly easy and cheap, assuming you can get the plugs to go on the cable to the 'new' cluster. You may loose a couple of functions, but at least you would have a working cluster.
I'm not offering - but could be done...

Given enough time and money I suppose It would be possible; after all Porsche did it. I found another mounting plate with the foil, paid $25 more than what I sold an '87 cluster, just so I wouldn't have to do something like that. I found the tabs were the foil folds around are very brittle. I just wanted to replace my cracked pod and broke the tab on mounting plate. Now I'm VERY CAREFUL unplugging cluster.

Ha ha, I had the same problem with my cluster and breaking the tab. I think it happened trying to jimmy the cluster/pod back onto the dash. I too need to tackle this project at some time. I will reuse all my gauges, but will need to find a good cluster frame. I will most likely relace the PCB (printed circuit board) too.

Instrument Cluster

If you have not found an instrument cluster, I have one from a 1982 Porsche European 928.
