Ya Ever Notice

Ya ever notice that "cheap" & or "inexpensive" are never in the same sentence as "928". Oh man, talk about a rude awakening!

928s are cheap to acquire, but they are surely not inexpensive to make or keep right. :-/

yep.....it's amazing that you can buy a 928 for less than a few thousand dollars......and then spend 20 thousand plus putting it back to it's former glory.

Selection, selection, selection.

Sometime after one realizes that cheap and inexpensive aren't words used when discussing 928s, it becomes clear that throwing money at them is not the solution...

All 928's are insane bargains, that should cost $35k to $75k, and the Porsche dealer should have a service lane for 928 ONLY. They were the flagship Porsche, and decades later still represent a pinnacle in engineering that has never been duplicated.

People tend to think you get what you pay for, which is total nonsense in a modern world, but cheap selling prices infect our minds with a false sense of lower value. Buying a 928 for $500 doesn't change it from being a $50k car, made out of parts that belong in a $50k car.

Some repairs can also be made inexpensively, revel in that moment, but realize its a lucky break, not the normal course of events. Some bearings may have perfectly good modern equivalents for $9.95 and others will be Porsche only and $497, but unless you replace all the parts that need to be replaced your drinking watered wine.

Driving your finally well sorted Shark...priceless
Explaining to non-owners the appeal of the Shark...priceless
The expression on the non-believer's face the first time you hit a twistie at 90mph..priceless
The journey to get there..priceless

For everything 928, there's MasterCard

.... except when "12 cylinder Ferrari or Lamborghini maintenance costs" is used in the same sentence as "928". If you ever own a 12 cylinder Ferrari or Lamborghini, the overall operating costs of a 928 will likely seem like a bargain, especially when you compare the overall build-quality, performance, and driving experience a 928 provides. For example, you can sure buy a lot of 928 distributor caps for what one Ferrari Testarossa distributor cap costs (i.e. requires two @ approximately $230 each).

Let's also not forget that some late model Cadillac and Corvette parts (especially electrical and suspension components) can cost more than same type of parts found in a 928.

I've always considered Porsche as the practical exotic, but its silly to think a car that you can safely drive all day at 150 mph is going to be cheap to keep nice.

I didnt research the 928 before I bought one. I paid $5000 for the car. The body is in great shape, on rust, dents, etc...The interior look good for a 1986 vehicle, no tears or holes in the carpet. The dash and pod should be replaced but are really not that bad. It was missing the AT shift handle. That was my first clue ($400) that this was no Volkswagen Corrado (car I sold to buy the 928). I am currently $5000 additional in engine, tranny, and brakes. But when I get the car back from the shop I know I'll have a smile on my face, even with the hole in my wallet.

I'd be willing to best most 928 owners go for a little bondage, whips and pony paly in the bedroom...You have to have a little masacism in you to truly enjoy owning a shark. You keep taking the punishment just hoping someday it will all end and with a well sorted shark it'll be your turn to be the sadonist.. here corvette,corvette,corvette.. here corvette..
