Speedo not working, electronic?

As you know from previous posts, I went through replacing the infamous disintegrating gear for the Odometer. I asume the speedo must in order for the odo to work. When I turn the key on, the speedo does jump to the end then back to 0. Any suggestions on what to look for?

talane 01-18-2009 06:56 AM

THat happened to mine too. You probably already checked this but I replaced the fuse and it went back to normal. Everything in my instrument cluster was inop. Sounds like yours is just the speedo?

MPDano 01-18-2009 07:04 AM

Yeah, here is what is working on the cluster:

Speedo: inop
Odometer: inop
RPM: operating
Water Temp: operating
Oil Pressure: pegged at top
Fuel Level: inop
Charging: operating

All warning lights are working.

Did you check the connector in the tire well above the front of the battery area? Its a 4 pin thing, sometimes loose.

N2O-SHARK 01-18-2009 02:59 PM

Take a pencil eraser to the contacts on the back of the gauge cluster. Speedo and oil pressure come in on the right sode clip. Take the wire harness clip off and erase the contact strips on the gage membrane. I shot a quick squiert of liquid wrench into the wire harness connector and cleaned it out with a q-tip.

If oil pressure is pegged out, you have a shorted ground wire, or the leads on the sender are backwards.

Is this car sitting out side in the rain??? Does it leak?

My son's 80 MY had similar issues and I replaced the fuse panel with a used one. His had corrosion issues when I tried to clean a few relays...pulled them out and rust dust with it. After a GOOD cleaning of the used panel and all new fuses the dash never gave him anymore trouble. Now to reseal that heater box so this one lasts awhile longer.

Yup, sits outside but no leaks as far as I can tell. Nothing wet after a super Cali rainstorm last month. Maybe I should get some of that electrical contact cleaner and squirt it in the connectors. And do the eraser thingy.

Got my Oil Pressure Gauge working (reversed wires at sensor). Only 3 more non-ops to go

MPDano 01-26-2009 04:21 PM

Did a quick drive around the neighborhood and walla, I got speedo. Not sure what fixed it but it was probably dirty contacts somewhere. Thanks everyone!!

MPDano 01-26-2009 06:20 PM

Oh, quick question. How do you reset the Odometer?

devilinblack 01-26-2009 09:54 PM

Bottom button on the left side of the pod, has an "O" on it.

MPDano 01-27-2009 04:19 AM

Ah, is this that small round electronic button?

devilinblack 01-27-2009 05:58 AM

No, should be the third button down, under the headlight knob and driving lights button. At least on mine that's where it is. Suppose it could be different on the Euro though?

MPDano 01-27-2009 06:10 AM

Ok, it's one of the Pod Butons. I will check this when I get home. Thanks again!

Danglerb 01-27-2009 10:15 AM

I seem to remember some cars had a small button under the pod to reset the odometer.

This is what I was talking about, but I will check both.

ROW/Euros have the rear fog light switch bottom left on the pod and a different reset switch - exact location varied by year. Probably the one you note - its an electric reset - reset it when not moving for best reliability.

Alan

MPDano 01-27-2009 10:46 AM

Thanks Alan, this is what I heard, "Reset when not moving as the gears may break."

MPDano 01-27-2009 04:44 PM

Yup, Alan, your right. It's the little button under the Pod. Mine is defective since I remember pressing it and it did nothing. I removed the 2 wires and put them together and walla, it reset my counter. At least I know its just a switch.

devilinblack 01-27-2009 06:46 PM

So does your odometer work?

I replaced the gear on mine even though it wasn't broken but only works when it feels like it. It'd be nice to be able to keep track of how much gas I'm using and oil I'm leaking per mile but for now that's just a dream!
