928 1978 anything special
ok guys
belonged to a lady late dad. a 928 came up forsale on craigslist local here. the car is up for offers but im not sure what a 78 5spd car is worth. im told low miles but havent confirmed this, the car doesnt run, she is sure the car is some special high horse power car and is worth alot of money. she said her paid 7 to 8k. but im thinking a non running car if clean is worth in the range of 2k. heres a link to the ad. http://anchorage.craigslist.org/cto/1042140600.html cheers ed

Unless the body and interior are in exceptional shape, I wouldn't even pay $2000 for it. I love mine, but they aren't the best of breed. The old gearboxes have notoriously cranky synchros (I can't use second for a couple miles every morning) and they were the lowest on power of the whole series. Another thing to keep in mind is that the CIS injection systems don't seem to like to sit, they develop even more problems that way.
There was one on craigslist here in San Diego a few days ago that looked to be in great shape and supposedly ran fine with 150K miles and the asking price was only $3500. Buying a non running 928 is a serious crap shoot that I wouldn't attempt unless I could get back the money by parting it out. |

Considering how much money will be required to get it going and keep it going, does it really matter whether the "intro" price is $2,000 or zero?
Whatever you pay for that or any other 928, it's like the entry fee at Disneyland. By the end of the day you'll have paid several hundred a head, regardless. Shop for the car, not the price. By the way, I love the early 5sp, and it's fast enough. The CIS system is very reliable if run frequently. Lots of other quirks about the drivetrain, however. |

Sounds like the lady has to sell it, which means what she wants for it is unfortunately meaningless, best offer will take it.
Find out the VIN, run a CarFax or AutoCheck, find out the title status, then inspect the car. Big question is do you want a 78 928 5 spd for yourself, there will not be any profit in buying, fixing, and selling it. Pretty much a guaranteed $5k to $10k loss. |

78 MY are the first year of these cars. There are a lot of parts specific to that year. VIN is needed in order to see if it is collect able as one of the first off the line (not likely, BUT possible) The "Checkered" interior is PRASHA and some people like them, but in itself it is not worth that much unless it is immaculate (again, not likely) The 78's are affectionately referred to as OB's or Old Buggers. They are not particularly fast, but can get out of their own way on good days. It has been sitting for HOW LONG? It Can't run so...you can't appraise most of the expensive bits....It is looking IMHO like a long shot so far. It is really hard to say without more information and some decent pictures. 1 glamor shot from 50 feet away does NOT cut it. Like an internet date, these things commonly do not look as good as the pictures. Any Documentation? (probably not)
Nice story...They all have a story. Figure at LEAST a grand in parts to get it going and 40 hours of labor to "wake up" before you can tackle whatever wiring needs to be done. You need to do Timing belts and all fluids, especially the gas immediately. You will need Tools, Manuals, Garage space, mechanical skill, and the patience of a saint to pull it all off. You will NOT make money on it. you WILL spend more to get it straight than if you just bought a running one. Then again, It is not about money. 2K????? ![]()

Yes, the Pascha is cool (to some of us) but it doesn't seem to hold up well. The fabric and vinyl in my car was so dry and sun baked that there was just no saving it. The PO had pulled all the interior panels with the intention of having them recovered and never got around to it. The car ran but vibrated like hell above 4K rpm (torque tube bearing) and the paint is in rather rough shape. I paid $2K for it 8 months ago, just to give you an idea of the value. Now it would probably be worth less.
Hell, even with most of the interior done, the torque tube fixed and it running great it's probably only worth $2K including the collection of spare wheels and tires I've accumulated. |

i have been wanting to get into a 928 and this is probably not the one rather than insult her with a price way out of what she is expecting i will just leave it alone and wait for another to show. i like the checkered interior though. she says this is a 928S and is very special but cant confirm due to the fact she is thousands of miles away. im gona leave it up to her to call me. cheers ed

If it's a 78, it's not a 928S, nor is it a 938 as she has in the ad. It's just a 928. Special to some, but not all that special.

Owners even with the car in possession often don't have a clue about it. Get the VIN and at least find out what condition its in. If nobody makes an offer it could go straight to scrap.
