Question Where is all this oil coming from?

Hi,

My 82 Euro has a bad oil leak and that's putting it lightly. Something on the passenger side of the engine, near the front, has let go. I cleaned things up and have it up on ramps. I added oil and started it up. The leak must be under pressure. Even the inside of the passenger front tire is getting sprayed. Are there any external oil lines? Or, are any of the tensioners oil pressure driven? I'll start ripping thins apart in the morning, but wanted to see if anyone knew of anything obvious to check first.

Same thing happened to my 83, can't say that I even remember what the exact cause was, as I replaced EVERYTHING. Basically you end up doing a timing belt service, as everything has to come off since nobody wants to put back on an oil soaked belt. I did all of the intake and coolant bridge as well as a front seal on the crank, and maybe even the oil pump.

Mine does that. As near as I can tell it's coming from the front cam seals and it's much worse under pressure. Running on the track, at certain g-loads and high RPM's my car can really lay down a smoke screen.

Like Danglerb said you pretty much end up doing a full timing belt service plus the cam seals and o-rings and anything else you can think of.

The catch22 is that I couldn't find the source of the oil leak with all the covers etc on the front, but once its all off you can't run the motor to be sure of the origin of the leak, so its fix everything or regret it later.

Number one thing I would do differently, is pull the darn motor so I could really have at the engine bay, replace the motor mounts, oil pan gasket, etc.

its the front main seal

I have a couple of things to add. The oil is coming right out of the front main seal. I can see the O-Ring has come out as far as it can before hitting the belt gear. The PO rebuilt the engine so everything was in pretty good shape. Now I'm tryin to get that belt gear off the crank so I can replace the seal. How it that thing supposed to come off?
Also, the PO disconnected the air pump. I assume he plugged up a hole someplace after. Where would the air pump get connected if it were still hooked in? I want to check the work and make sure it was done right. I'm worried that too much pressure is building up in the block and blew the seal off the front.

The front main seal can blow out if it is over rev'd when cold. Another reason could be due to a plugged pressure relief valve.

Okay, where's the pressure relief valve?

Drivers side of the lower block. Look for a 17mm (?) brass nut. There may also be another temperature valve that reroutes oil to the radiator in the same location. It, the relief valve, will be the one without the tubing running off of the housing.
