recommend a decent circuit tester

I would like to buy a halfway decent circuit tester, but don't know where to start. Just something middle of the road that will get the job done. Mechanical is my thing, but got to learn the electrical too at some time. I know it should have its own power source so it doesn't interfere with the circuit your testing but that about it. I live in the boonies so a typical chain store like walmart, autozone, advance, radio shack, etc is about all we have. Will buy from internet if theres a better place to buy one. No looking for a debate, just what everyone is using.

Thanks,

Virtually anything you buy will be adequate for the kind of test you need to do. get a Digital Multimeter - try to get one witha 10A current range - this isnt hard.

You can find some reasonable choices at radioshack. You will get bigger display, more ranges and better probes for more money - but for $50 you can get a nice one - for $20 you can get a workable one... your choice.

Harbor Freight sells a basic meter for $2, volts, ohms, and amps, covers all the bases. Do very much though and you will want something nicer, for me the cheap probes etc. that come with cheap meters are the worst, but nice probes seem to only come with very costly meters.

Get something, use it a bit, decide for yourself whats important or if its ok.

I kind of like this type, a pen dmm, about $30, but only 200 ma current.

If you want a decent meter that will about anything you need on a car, try this one from Sears:
