WTBorrow 16V timing belt tools
 

Hey folks!
Happy me is into the project pretty deep now and I am getting ready to do the timing belt.:D Would someone Please, Please lend me a FW lock and / or Tensioner tool? I am not fussy, whatever works. There is no REAL rush as there is currently plenty to keep me busy with, but, I would like to get this thing all back together fairly soon.


ALso, If you can recommend a good how to...step by step instructions for doing the job...that would help a lot. For some reason my factory manual doesn't have instructions for the 16V (weird huh?) and the 32V instructions are....lacking. Too bad the 928 community doesn't have an online manual like Clarks. Maybe we should write one...

there's a manual on Ebay for about $16.00, advertised for the 85-86 928. According to some, you can use it for the 16v as well. Others will have to chime in to confirm.

Also, you may want to plan on just buying a tensioner tool b/c you will need it again in about 1200 miles. Some 928 vendors will loan you a flywheel lock.

You could buy my Kempf tension tool for $45 and I will also loan you the fly wheel lock tool. When you are done with the job, just mail back the fly wheel lock tool.

Hey everybody! The outpouring of support and aid to a man and his car is touching!

I got some good deals from some really neat people and I bought the 2 items in question. For those of you who know just HOW cheap I am, that means a lot.

SO...Thank you for all your help. It appears that I am all set for these items.

Work Progresses, and The next item on the wants list is an Engine support bar. to do the Pan gasket and possibly the mounts. Anybody got one? Didn't someone make one out of wood or something?

As for the support bar, yes they've been built out of 4x4's or maybe 4x6's if they have such a thing. Harbor Freight has them for like $50 so if you find a good coupon you could buy a proper one pretty cheap.

And my brother was giving me a hard time about some scrap 4 by 4 s that I was hanging on to! HA!

jthwan22: Yea, I was thinking of doing a bit of a rebuild as long as I have it off. The rack is not loose, but then again, it is not tight either and I am a stickler for handling.

MPDano: are you talkin about Leroy? I would join in the fun but I am currently stuck in TX. I am not sure that there is enough left of Leroy to fix, but that is in the hands of wrenches far better than I. I hope they document it well.

devlinblack: I will post pics. I am thinking about just doing a blog. Most of the info is in "Houston appraisal" but the appraisal stage is pretty much over and I am getting into some hard core stuff here. I have also not been taking pictures as much as I should. tsk tsk.

What about Engine Mounts? good idea to do WYAIT? They look OK. Is there a good aftermarket option? something fluid filled?

Motor mounts from Roger, your's are almost certainly bad, the factory ones don't last.

With experience you can tell by looking at various height references, but if the motor doesn't rock when you blip the throttle they are bad.

If you are doing motor mount, get the solid kind from Roger. You may want to change the oil pan gasket with the new orange kind (not OEM cork). The rack bushing is also WYIT. Some people also do the rod bearings while the oil pan is off. You can also drill and tap the oil pan for GTS baffle.

Jthwan22: I am going in to do the pan gasket and the baffle. I have considered the bearings but the engine is pretty tight so I might just plastigage 2/6 and if it is in specs, call it good. The mounts and rack are while I am there. Anything else??

Cut the 4X4's today...I think it is all pretty doable. Got to pick up a wood drill tomorrow. I couldn't find actual plans for the support, but it seems straight forward. I will just drill the holes directly above the lift brackets. I was thinking of lining frame with rubber or something to protect the paint. Do I glue or screw the 2x4s to the 4x4s? or just let em rest.

Warren, I think Dwayne just have the 4X4 resting on top of each other. The pressure of the engine will make it stay. You could put some protection between the fender and wood. Some people powder coat the oil pan as WYIT. That could be a bit much. The oil pan pan stud in another option. The blue locktight on the oil pan bolt could be good enough.

Warren, you got my flywheel lock for almost 3 months. When do I get it back!!

Hey James..I am AL, Not Warren, Al is the Mechanic, Warren is the owner. People get us confused all the time. I am the talented, good looking one. Anyhow, To recap the situation...Your tool is on the 928 in the garage in Houston, when I get back there I will finish the job that was delayed due to a lot more WYAI than a non-928 owner would really understand. I am out in California, helping out other 928 owners and so had another FW tool with me in my bag of tricks. Rather than have Warren take the FW lock off of the car, I sent you the other fw lock that I had with me. This way you will have one. If you are really nervous about it, the tracking number is 0309114000000545077 sent USPS from 90807 at 4:29 pm Friday. It should be there in a few days. Be a pal and drop us a line when you get it.
