Yay!

Well thanks Normy,

I'm pretty gun-shy with 'er right now. I'm going to pull the belt covers and see if everything still looks okay and triple check that belt tension again.

The 928 Finally MADE IT! I made the 600 mile round trip to California yesterday. It passed smog and brake & light inspections. I went to DMV and should have the title in 30 days or so. I was very pleased with how she ran. There seems to be a "sweet spot" around 82 MPH where road & wind & engine noise gets quiet and you don't feel like you're going much over 50. It didn't consume any noticeable amount of oil. The smog check is pretty grueling. It was hot yesterday in Yreka and having to run the car at 2600 RPM for several minutes at a time while parked in a shop got things hot. I'm only running a 7 pound radiator cap and she boiled over while taking the test. I jumped in a drive around the block and it cooled right off. I suspect that maybe my fan clutch needs some attention - or maybe I'll shop for an electric fan. I should never have to get her smog checked again here in oregon so an electric fan would let me get rid of that whole fan/air pump belt!

I have an electric in my 928.

Word of advice: Buy a really powerful one.

MPDano 07-17-2009 10:14 AM

Sweeeeeeeeet! Yeah, I had the same thing with mine, they had mine idling for what seemed like 45 minutes, it also started to boil. Anyways, yeah mine does the same thing. At 80 it's like it just settles in and wants more. It gets quieter and seems to lock into the road.

Congrats on the pass.

Electric fans aren't part of the emissions system, change them anytime you want.

Installed an electric fan this past weekend and it seems to work great. My idle jumped up to 1100 after removing the fan and belt, so I turned it back to about 900. I can notice a difference in the cars available power too. I think I'm going to be pleased with this modification.

Still running well? Too bad you didn't switch to a Porktensioner - after installing one myself I'd never go back to the original design.

I had it towed all the way home and then jumped in the BMW and made the trip. I'll get into it next week and hope I can tell why it broke - it was a fairly new belt. I'm thinking I should have bought one of the tension gauges instead of eye-balling it.

Gee, ya think? Hehehe.

How much was it?

P-tensioner bracket is less than $150 including shipping--available exclusively from Roger. He can give you the exact price.

you will also need:

Audi tensioner, pulley and lever

these can be bought from several vendors, not necessarily from Roger.

best price I've found is

tensioner $$69.55
lever $39.95
pulley $49.33

shop around and you may find better, but this was well below what Roger quoted me a while back.

while doing this, you might also consider updating your TB and pulleys to HTD style. All toothed pulleys and gears will need to be swapped to convert to HTD.
